Info Tech for Medical Profession Unit 1- Recognizing Computers

Objectives Understand the importance of computers Identify significant times in computer history Describe how all computers function the same way Define computers & computer systems Classify different types of computers

The Importance of Computers Computers are everywhere What parts of your daily life use computers? Listening to music Using an ATM Changing the temperature In the car (cruise control, attaching to module to troubleshoot) Restaurant to input the order Store POS Control robot in factory

Activity- Computer History Timeline In groups of 2, make a computer history timeline of events Use the online timeline maker Mark at least 10 significant events Use your own words to describe Include a picture 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s

Brief Computer History I 1821 Charles Babbage “Father of Computing” Steam-powered calculator 40’s ENIAC Size of a city block Used for military Less powerful than our phones 76-77 Apple I & II Computer Jobs & Wozniak 1st user-friendly PC The term personal computer refers to a computer designed to be used by one person at a time.

Brief Computer History II 1981 IBM PC released Bill Gates worked for IBM Used DOS $3500 80’s Clones IBM sold design to companies Clones/compatibles released IBM PC- Disk Drive storage- enough space for 42 text files, 56 VERY LOW res photos, and not even a half an mp3 song! Display- monochrome green; could hook up to TV for color; Weight- about 60lbs!

More Recent History AOL (as a service) Internet (as we know it) iPod 1993 Internet (as we know it) Mid 1990’s iPod 2001 First Smartphone 1994 2001- in US

Review- 5Q Who created the first user-friendly computer? Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak What term describes a computer design made available to other manufacturers? Compatible or clone What company was responsible for allowing compatible computers to happen? IBM What computer took up the size of a city block back in the 40’s & 50’s? ENIAC What four function does every computer perform? Input data, process data, output data, store data

What is a Computer? Receives data (INPUT), processes data, stores data, produces a result (OUTPUT) Computer includes: Hardware Software Peripherals In this lesson, you will begin to broaden your vision of the word computer to include many things that process and store information, including people. In fact, the word computer, in older dictionaries, is defined as a person who makes calculations. Bottom Picture: Identify HARDWARE, SOFTWARE, INPUT, OUTPUT

Information Processing Cycle Scan an item (Receives data INPUT), processes data (INTERNALLY), outputs information (ON MONITOR/RECEIPT), stores data (HD)

Where Are Computers Used? Students should name and write on the slide where they see computers used. What makes them convenient to be used everywhere?

Desktop Computer Personal computer- PC or MAC Individual user Come in case/monitor or all-in-one Case is also known as a tower. Desktop remains stationary. Easy to open & upgrade. Typical price is around $400-$1200. All-in-ones with a touchscreen can be around $800.

Laptop/Notebook PC or Mac Portability/Battery Touchpad or Pointing Device 2-in-1 laptop/tablet May or may not have optical drive Power is comparable/equal to desktops. LOOK UP PRICES in weekly ad: Range from $300-$2000.

Chromebook Laptop running Google’s Chrome OS Fast boot Apps instead of software Cloud-based storage Use while connected to Internet

Tablets PC in smaller size Many functions of PC Similar internal components Touchscreen Apps, Internet, Email Android, iOS, Windows Can use a stylus.

Comparing Laptops & Tablets Feature Laptop Tablet Accepts More Input Devices Better/More Battery Life Bigger Storage Capacity Better/Higher Performance Smaller Physical Size Higher Price Have students decide which is better. Use check marks. Discuss why.

Smartphones Many features of a computer Touchscreen & virtual keyboard Internet, camera, music, GPS, phone, email, text Touchscreen & virtual keyboard Windows, iOS, Android Discuss what to look for in a smartphone: Touchscreen or physical keyboard, battery life, storage capacity, RAM, size/screen size, price

Other Mobile Devices E-book reader Portable music player Handheld game device Embedded Oss here

Activity There are many unique devices for computers In groups of 2, find a unique device for an iPad

Workstation Very powerful & fast Lots of storage space Video Editing, CAD, Animation, Scientific, CSI, X-Ray

Server Performs functions for computers on a network Rack mount or case Provides a service Holds Files Handles Email Stores Web Sites

Mainframe Thin clients/PCs connect to it to access data Huge amounts of data processing Process payroll & billing in large companies Large institutions & govt. Airline flight scheduling Hundreds of thousands $ Process payroll & billing for large corporations, handling millions of credit card transactions, gathering & tabulating census info for the government, scheduling flights for an airline. Kept in secure, climate-controlled rooms.

Supercomputers Very big & fast Perform BIG calcs Volumes of data Millions of $$$ Government Military Research Labs NASA Can have millions of cores of processors.

Computers in the Medical Field Diagnostics X-ray, MRI, CT Patient monitoring Medical records Robotic Surgical Systems

Types of Everyday Computers Name some… Embedded computers: Processor built into a device such as ATM, car, appliances like a fridge, cameras, TV, Calculators, some gaming systems, GPS, POS, robotic manufacturing, older mp3 players. EXAMPLE: a washer with embedded computer can use power & water more efficiently; cars use them to sense being out of a lane or when an object is in your path. They have an embedded OS. A lot of embedded devices have actually developed into mobile OS.

Review- 4Q Managing an airline reservation & ticketing system would be best performed by which class of computer? Mainframe Which device would animators use to make CG effects for a movie? Workstation What is the fastest type of computer? Supercomputer Appliances are what kind of computer? Embedded

Review- 4Q What’s the biggest advantage of using a notebook? Portability T/F. A server is dedicated to sharing resources & data. True Which type of computer provides services to other PCs? Servers What device would have Android OS on it? Smartphone or Tablet

Integrated Technology Unit 1- Recognizing Computers
