Ch. 1 The Science of Chemistry Sec. 1 What is Chemistry? Sec. 2 Describing Matter Sec. 3 How is Matter Classified?

What is Chemistry? Describe ways in which Chem is part of daily life. Describe the characteristics of three common states of matter Describe physical and chemical changes and give examples List four observations that suggest a chem change has occurred.

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of the properties and changes of matter. How do you depend on Chemistry on a daily basis?

What is Chemistry? What are the three states of Matter? Look at description of all 3 states of matter on pages 6-7

Changes of Matter Physical changes occur when the state of matter changes but the chemical make-up of the matter stays the same. Can you think of any examples?

Changes of Matter Chemical changes occur when the identities of substances change and new substances are formed.

Changes of Matter Evidence of chemical Change Evolution of a gas Formation of a precipitate Release or absorption of energy Color change in the reaction system

Sec. 2 Describing Matter Distinguish between characteristics of matter(mass, volume, weight) Identify the Si units in measurements and calculations Set up conversion factors and use them in calculations. ID and describe physical properties including density ID Chemical properties

Describing Matter The space an object occupies is its volume. What are some ways you know of to determine volume. The quantity of matter is mass. The amount of matter in an object. Mass is not weight. Weight changes due to gravitational force.

Describing Matter Units of measurement SI Units Quantitative vs. Qualitative SI Units Length=meter (m) Mass=Kilogram (Kg) Time=seconds (s) Volume=mililiters (mL)

Describing Matter Derived units are the units expressed after a calculation. Ex. m/s, g/mL

Describing Matter Physical properties can be determined without changing the chemical structure of the compound. What are some examples of physical properties?

Describing Matter Chemical properties can only be observed by trying to cause a chemical change. What are some examples of chemical changes?

Sec. 3 How is Matter Classified Atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds are pure substances. Mixtures contain 2 or more pure substances Homogenous and heterogeneous What is the difference between a pure substance and a mixture?
