Strategies to Address Research Opportunity and Performance Evidence (ROPE)/Track Record: ARC Discovery Projects Weighting of Selection Criteria to Obtain Score Grant Scheme Feasibility and Benefit Project Quality and Innovation Investigator (ROPE)** Research Environ-ment Mentoring/Capacity Building Discovery 20% 25% 40% 15% DECRA 10% 35% Laureate 30% Professor Phyllis Tharenou Executive Dean, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Science 5 February 2014

Aims of Answers to ROPE Questions To provide evidence for: Outstanding research output and achievement with respect to opportunity (Q1 ROPE) Potential to undertake ground-breaking research Relevance of past outputs to this proposal: Mark relevant research outputs with asterisks So: Choose how gain high ROPE score, eg: Might include an international partner investigator if has a good track record/ROPE Publish with co-CIs Individual applicant alone if a top record Write answers to help get a high ROPE score

ROPE: Answering 5 Questions Q1. Details of your career and research opportunities in last 10 years (to help assess ECRs, women, industry-based applicants) Q2. ***Recent significant outputs and ARC grants in last 10 years (since 2004): A1, B1, C1, E1, Other eg major exhibitions, compositions or performances Q3. ***Ten career-best research publications (no time limit) Q4. Further evidence for research impact & contributions to the field over last 10 years most relevant to this Proposal Q5. A statement on your most significant contributions to the research field of this proposal

Q3: Choosing 10 Career “Best” Publications Q3: What Is Best? Means as recognised by other scholars in your field Avoid giving: Textbooks Working papers Reports, Government publications (can go in Q. 5) Conference presentations or abstracts Avoid if can: Books or book chapters in lesser or unknown presses Chapters authored by you in an edited book you authored Lowly ranked journals by Impact Factor or other ranking Pubs “in press”/“forthcoming” unless in an A* Q2: What goes in? eg from A1, B1, C1, E1 (only for relevant disciplines)

Q3: After Choose “10 Best” Research Outputs QUALITATIVE response For each research output, must give 30 words on its impact or significance eg Provide a substantive argument: Why content of this publication is recognized by other scholars in the field as having advanced knowledge If can , provide their recognition of the output eg Published book review: give reference eg Gere, 2010, JAP, 5, 1-2. Award or prize (name of awarding organization) Other assessment (2) QUANTITATIVE response Type straight on at the end of the publication information (so not counted in the 30 words), numerical, publicly available evidence: Example Gere, R. (2001). How to get a good ROPE score. Journal of Applied Assessment, 15, 1-2. WoS Rank of Impact Factor (category of Management) 10/77; 5-year IF 3.6; Cites: Scopus 32, WoS 12, Googlescholar 65; WoS average cites per paper worldwide (Mgt) = 3.

Qs 2 & 3: Last 10 years & Best 10 (Continued) (2) Give numerical, publicly available evidence of impact, typed at the end of the publication on the same line (so can do also for the last 10 years of publications): Journal rank of impact factor or other rank measure Web of Science Ranks of Impact Factors, IFs (also Scopus scimagojr.com) - in Journal Citation Reports Ranks established by publicly available accepted sources eg prof associations, journal publication No. of citations Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar (benchmark if can) Benchmarked eg no. of cites for pub. vs average for field Other recognition of academic research impact of your work that is brief and numerical This saves the CoE time so they like you

Book or Book Chapter Quality Qualitative assessment Give any published reviews of book or chapter eg in a journal or from a professional magazine Gere, R. 2010. Review of “Book Title”, Personnel Psychology, 5, 1-2. Give quality of publisher eg Evidence for top book publisher in your field especially if can validate Quantitative Give no. of citations for book (eg Scopus, Web of Science, Google scholar) Perhaps benchmarked eg against citation counts for publications of scholars in the field or your discipline eg derived from Googlescholar for books from many disciplines reported in: Harzing, A. W. (2010-2011). The publish or perish book. Melbourne: Tarma Software Research Pty Ltd. http://www.harzing.com/popbook.htm

Q4: FURTHER EVIDENCE for research impact & contributions 1. Give research outputs other than publications: eg Patents, IP licenses, other research income, major exhibitions, compositions or performances, other prof. activities etc 2. Give research impact relative to opportunity and discipline and for end-user benefit: eg End User Major Research Impact eg Use of your work for policy, policy advice Adoption of techniques, services, products etc by practitioners Government publications & reports you did Relevant consultancies for government , industry & community bodies Publications in practitioner journals, invited advice to practitioners (Invited workshops) Academic research Impact eg Total citations, h-index (WoS, Scopus, Google scholar), other index Invitations, Honours & awards/prizes, other esteem measures eg Keynote addresses at international conferences Editor/Assoc.
