Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ARC LINKAGE 2016 – SESSION 3 PARTNER INVESTIGATOR TRACK RECORDS AND PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT DEAKIN RESEARCH – GRANTS Rose Firkin - Executive Officer – Grants Dr Tracey McInerney – Senior Grants Officer

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B OUTLINE 1. Selection Criteria 2. Crafting a solid PI track record 3. How to address the PROJECT Research Environment section 4. Questions

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B MAIN FEATURES–SELECTION CRITERIA 20% - Investigators 50% - Proposed Project –Significance & Innovation (25%) –Approach & Training (15%) –Project Research Environment (10%) 30% - Commitment from Partner

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B 2016 ARC LP CHANGES– PARTNER INVESTIGATORS The proposal may nominate a PI from each Partner Organisation DU advice is to include Partner Investigators where possible to indicate commitment and to ensure engagement

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B INVESTIGATOR ROLES Chief Investigators and Partner must meet their respective eligibility criteria at the ‘scheme specific commencement date and for the duration of the project’ LP2016 Commencement date = 1 July 2016

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B INVESTIGATOR ROLES Partner Investigators (PIs) MUST: NOT meet the eligibility criteria for a CI have the capacity to make a serious commitment to carrying out the Project and cannot assume the role of a supplier of resources for work that will largely be placed in the hands of others

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PARTNER INVESTIGATOR Must take significant intellectual responsibility for the planning & conduct of the Project & for any strategic decisions called for in its pursuit; and/or Have the experience & capacity to provide effective supervision, support & mentoring of research personnel in their areas of expertise; and/or Have the relevant skills & experience to effectively manage a similar scale research project

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B TRACK RECORD All investigators (including PIs) are assessed and merit ranked on the following basis (20%): –Research opportunity and performance evidence (ROPE) –Potential to engage in collaborative research with end-users –Time and capacity to undertake and manage the proposed research in collaboration with the PO

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PI TRACK RECORD Must be evident throughout the proposal not just in one section Part G2: Role of PI – is optional BUT I think it would be unwise NOT to complete this They should demonstrate that they are equipped to handle their role PI may select more than one of the dropdown options if applicable to their role on this project –Tie this section closely to their proposed role on the project

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PI TRACK RECORD Don’t settle for a sentence – ask them to consider this as they would a job application They need to convince the reader they are the right person to undertake this role and that they have the skills and experience to bring the project and its outputs to fruition

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B WHAT IS ROPE? Research Opportunity and Performance Evidence ARC and its assessors and the College of Expert members are aware that PI’s will not be able to demonstrate ROPE akin to that of researchers or academic staff There are other ways of demonstrating their capacity and ability to undertake the role that they will play

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE Evidence over last 10 years for G10 (2005 onwards) – details on your career and opportunities for research Instructions to Applicants (ITA’s) provides information on what to cover – PIs should simply answer the questions posed Part (vi) allows room to outline other aspects of a PI’s career that is relevant – they should use this section to demonstrate their credentials

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – RECENT SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH OUTPUTS AND ARC GRANTS (G11) PI’s often have outputs and publications they can list here Complex plans & reports & consultancies Policies and/or Policy advice Other professional publications for industry publications or associations Industry guidelines, trainer’s manuals Exhibitions, trade shows, product releases

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – G11 If there is NOTHING to add here, PI’s must make a brief explanatory statement as to why the question is not applicable

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – 10 BEST RESEARCH OUTPUTS (G12) Not time limited so PI’s can list important outputs prior to 2005 plus they have room to justify the inclusion of a particular piece of evidence Where you are making claims that the research will lead to policy outcomes it would be useful to show that your PI has had actual tangible influence on policy – preferably recent Fine if there are only a few publications to list If there is NOTHING to add here, PI’s can make a brief explanatory statement that the question is not applicable

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – FURTHER EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH IMPACT & CONTRIBUTIONS (G13) Research Impact is defined as: “the demonstrable contribution that research makes to the economy, society, culture, national security, public policy or services, health, the environment, or quality of life, beyond contributions to academia”

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – FURTHER EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH IMPACT & CONTRIBUTIONS PI’s often have evidence they can list Patents, IP licences, Consultancy work Development of new technologies Involvement in R&D or government bids/tenders Implementation of new knowledge or policies or processes that changed their industry

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – FURTHER EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH IMPACT & CONTRIBUTIONS Are they used as an ‘expert’ in any type of capacity? Do they undertake peer review or are they editors on specific journals? Do they belong to any peak industry bodies or committees? Have they presented at professional fora or conferences? Do they have specific expertise vital for the project?

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B ROPE – FURTHER EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH IMPACT & CONTRIBUTIONS If there is NOTHING to add here, PI’s can make a brief explanatory statement as to why the question is not applicable to their background and role

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT Describe the existing or developing project research environment within the Administering Organisation (AO) / Partner Organisation/s (PO) Describe how the Project aligns with the AO’s strategic plan or other strategic developments if applicable Outline the plans for communicating research results including scholarly and public communication and dissemination

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT Focus on the local environment If your area is supported by the University or Faculty (eg you are part of a Strategic Research Centre or a Faculty Research Group) this should be mentioned Do you have access to specific equipment or facilities necessary for the project?

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT Existing or developing environment doesn’t just mean stating ‘DU is committed to the area of international politics’ you must make a strong case and demonstrate that commitment How can you demonstrate that the proposal is being undertaken in the right location? What access to expertise or equipment do you have that will ensure the successful progress of the proposal Instil confidence in the reader that this is located in just the right environment – don’t ask them to take a leap of faith

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT ERA if it plays in your favour, mention it Assessors do look up ERA scores – if yours was lower than you’d like, emphasise the changes that have occurred in your area in recent years (new staff, funding of centres, new awards/grants)

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT Does the PO have specific equipment or facilities critical to the project? What about technical or scientific expertise? Why are they the perfect Partner Organisation to undertake this research?

Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B PROJECT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT PO has an opportunity at section D3 to outline alignment against its strategic plan and how the project is of value to the PO At section D4 (PO letter) to outline alignment against its objectives Don’t duplicate – use the space wisely
