4 Citation databases – functions
Topic search Citation tracking Author metrics (h-index) Journal evaluation Impact factor SNIP

5 When to use citation databases?
When to use citation databases? You to find articles with your research area! How many times have my articles been cited? Who is citing my papers? Which is my h-index? Which journals are most frequently used within my field? Which journals have had the highest impact within my field? Linköpings universitet

6 Citation databases Content: journals as well as conference proceedings and book series Inclusion criteria: Transparent journal selection process Content: journals as well as conference series, trade publications and book series Covers all journals in Medline (the core of PubMed) and Embase (pharmacological database) Inclusion criteria: Transparent journal selection process Content: scholarly literature; articles, theses, books, abstracts, patents, etc Inclusion criteria: No transparency “Which specific journals do you cover? Ahem, we index papers, not journals. … ”

7 Citation databases – journal coverage
The citation databases cover a broad range of journals within different fields BUT The coverage of individual fields can be weak and uneven within and between the databases

8 - Core Collection WoS Core collection includes: 12000 journals

12 Different reasons for citing publications
Different reasons for citing publications Give credit to ideas, concepts, methodology and empirical findings of others Identify related body of work Provide background reading Correct the work of other’s Criticize previous work Dispute the claims of others to have been first with the work Maintaining of professional and/or social connections Raise citation count/self-citation Ease of access to the cited work The cited publication is frequently cited by other authors in the field Mijnhardt, W. (2011). Reasons for citation; why would you cite an author or the work? [blog], February 1st. [ ] Linköpings universitet

13 - Citation Network

14 Get updated when the article is cited
- Citation Network older articles newer articles related articles Get updated when the article is cited

15 - Analyze results Analyze results for identifying trends and patterns
For example if you wnat ot know which journals is are frequently occuring within the dataset This function allows you to group and rank records in a results set by extracting data values from a variety of fields. Use this function to find the most prevalent authors in a particular field of study or generate a list of institutions ranked by record count based on your search query. Usage Count The Usage Count is a measure of the level of interest in a specific item on the Web of Science platform. The count reflects the number of times the article has met a user’s information needs as demonstrated by clicking links to the full-length article at the publisher’s website (via direct link or Open-Url) or by saving the article for use in a bibliographic management tool (via direct export or in a format to be imported later).

20 Task The citation databases Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar provide amongst other bibliometric data on the author level. Reflect on if any problems can occur when obtaining data via an author search! If so, what can you do to avoid the problem? Linköpings universitet

21 – h-index How to identify your publications from a result’s list containing publications from multiple authors? Refine by choosing: organization or affiliation or etc Review the results list and mark the publications to be included by selecting the checkbox and then choose ”Add to marked list”. The publications are then added to the ”Marked list” and can be analyzed further from there.
