Expectations in Year 1 Rules We expect the children to follow the class rules. These are the same throughout the school. Children are beginning to be able to work more independently and there will be times when we ask the children to work silently. We expect the children to work to the best of their ability, which differs from child to child. We expect the children to work without disturbing others. This quote is from page paragraph 2.1 of the revised framework. The purpose of observation, remains, as it always has been, to inform planning for next steps in children’s learning.

Year 1 Expectations Rewards Consequences The children will receive a reward (house point, name on the rainbow chart or sticker) for working to the best of their ability and behaving very well. Consequences Consequences for children not following the school rules are: a warning, working away from others, miss a play and speak to a senior member of staff. This quote is from page paragraph 2.1 of the revised framework. The purpose of observation, remains, as it always has been, to inform planning for next steps in children’s learning.

Homework Homework will be given on Friday and expected back by Wednesday (to give us time to mark and put new homework in). Spellings Children will be given six spellings each week. These will consist of three high frequency words and three words based around the sound(s) learnt in their phonics group. We will give them out on a Friday and test them the following Friday.

Class Toy All Year 1 classes have a class soft toy that will go home with a child every week. Please encourage the children to write a few sentences about what they did over the weekend and maybe draw a picture in the diary that accompanies the toy. Please feel free to take a photo of your child and the soft toy to be put into the diary.

Reading Children will be able to read to the class teacher or TA at least once a week and more than once if we have parent helpers coming in. The children choose their own books from the banded books to take home. It would be very helpful if the children read at home for at least 10 minutes every day. The children will also be allocated ‘Bug Club’ books for them to read at home.

Phonics Screening Test In June, children in Year 1 will take the national phonics screening check. Children will apply their phonic knowledge to read 40 real and pseudo (alien) words which can be decoded using their phonics. Mrs Wyman will be giving a presentation after this talk with more information regarding the phonics check.

Procedures in Year 1 Snack and milk- if children have paid for milk they will receive their milk mid-morning. Snack is provided during playtime- carrots, pears, apples, bananas or strawberries. No dinner tickets are needed up until year 3. Each child needs to have a named water bottle. These can be refilled in class and children can have a drink at designated times. They are also encouraged to drink from the fountain at playtimes.

Procedures in Year 1 The children are encouraged to use the toilet during play and lunch times. They will be able to use them during class time if they need to. Feel free to ask quick questions at the end of the day otherwise please phone the office to make an appointment so that a suitable time can be arranged. Year 1 teachers plan lessons together therefore provision for each child will be same. P.E and swimming - Please make sure all items are labelled with your child’s name to avoid mix ups!

Polite reminder The children should bring in their bookbags to school everyday No backpacks as BOOKBAGS please. We struggle to fit them in to our bookbag boxes and are very short on space! If you have a backpack already then this can still be used PE / swimming.

Home/school communication The yellow reading diary in your child’s book bag is primarily used to record how well your child is reading. Please write in the diary regularly as it informs us of their reading progress at home. This diary also serves as a two way communication with us and you. Please jot down any questions, concerns or any brief notes. These are checked every morning by our TA.

School Website www.engayne.co.uk There is a year 1 page that will have relevant information on. Please check the website for WOW updates.

E- Safety When children use the ICT equipment in school we train them using our E safety policy and rules to keep safe. Please monitor your children when they are using devices at home to ensure they are safe and protected.

Playground /School Grounds Please remember to keep your child with you at the start and end of the school day keeping them off the grassed area and infant outdoor gym for health and safety reasons.

Thank you for coming today. Any questions?
