Hitler & the Holocaust 10pt The period from 1933 when Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, to 1945, the year the prisoners were liberated and the end of the war in Europe. Answer: What is the Holocaust!

Hitler & the Holocaust 20pt These are three stages of Hitler’s “Final Solution.” Possible Answer: The Jews are unable to leave their homes for three days, are unable to keep valuables, must wear the star of David.

Answer: News that the end of War II and Hitler’s regime was close offered the Holocaust prisoners temporary relief as they considered the idea of freedom.

Symbolism & Terms 30pt Explain why the hanging of the angelic Pipel symbolizes the death of God for Elie. Possible Answer: The hanging of the young Pipel symbolizes the death of God because when the young child suffered unable to die because of his light weight, Elie believed that God must be dead if He would allow such an atrocity to take place. the child to die swiftly.

Symbolism & Terms 50pt Explain how the following statement is a hyperbole? “We were masters of nature, masters of the world.” Answer: Nature is a powerful element that has often killed humans. Wiesel is exaggerating to demonstrate how much the survivors has suffered yet are still alive.

Plot 1 10pt These are three characteristics of Elie Wiesel before the Holocaust. Possible Answers: Spiritual, intelligent, sensitive, joyful

Plot 1 20pt Moshe the Beadle witnessed this take place when he was deported with the foreign Jews. Answer: The deportees were forced to dig their own graves and then shot into them and babies were thrown in air and shot as well.

Plot 1 30pt This is one example of how the Jews demonstrated dignity in the face Nazi cruelty. Possible Answer: In the video, “The Devil’s Arithmetic,” Hannah chose to take the place of her cousin Rivakah.

Plot 1 40pt Elie’s father dies as a result of these three things. Elie reacts in this way. Answer: He could have died from dysentery, his crushed skull from the kick to the head, or was burned alive in the crematory. Elie does not cry, he only feels like a burden has being lifted off his shoulders.

Plot 1 50pt After they Youth from Warsaw was hung, Elie states that the soup tasted good that night. After the young Pipel was hung, Elie states that the soup tasted like corpses. These are the reasons why. Possible Answer: The youth from Warsaw died with his pride still intact when he cursed Germany and this act made Elie feel as if the Jews won a small victory but the Pipel’s death reaffirmed that God had forsaken them, another loss for the Jews.

Theme 10pt Write a theme for the following subject that is explored in Wiesel’s memoir and give one example to support it: Survival. Possible Answer: The human body is capable of surviving most extreme conditions. Ex. Elie’s father was able to run 42 miles in one night.

Theme 20pt Write a theme for the following subject that is explored in Wiesel’s memoir and give one example to support it: Emotional Death Possible Answer: A person can become numb to the most atrocious events if witnessed on a daily basis. Ex. Juliek asked when the hanging of the Warsaw youth was going to be over because he was hungry.

Theme 30pt Write a theme for the following subject that is explored in Wiesel’s memoir and give one example to support it: Spiritual faith. Answer: When in dire circumstances, a person will often become angry with God and question His presence in their life. Ex. Elie Wiesel was angry with God for allowing the Jews to suffer so.

Theme 40pt Write a theme for the following subject that is explored in Wiesel’s memoir and give one example to support it: Dignity in the face of cruelty. Answer: Human dignity can not be taken away by others only given up with our consent. Ex. The Youth from Warsaw was not afraid to die and right before he was killed he exclaimed that all humans are free, a belief that was not stripped away because of his captivity.

Theme 50pt Write a theme for the following subject that is explored in Wiesel’s memoir and give one example to support it: Human compassion. Answer: No matter how dehumanizing a situation a person can be placed in, he or she can still maintain their human capacities such as having compassion on others. Ex. Many fathers and sons remained with each other for years in the concentration camps.
