My Kohler Generator Installation, Model 20RESD Mike Lizotte Marion, MA.

Why Kohler Like any major purchase that I make I do a significant amount of research to ensure that I am getting a good value, high quality, and when applicable good resale value. I looked at all the major home generator manufacturers and after significant time online I felt that the Kohler brand was going to best meet my requirements and protect my investment I would also like to say that there is a tremendous amount of data out there and if you do your homework you can learn and not make the same purchase mistake that others have documented and put out for the rest of the world to see

Choosing a Dealer While I had pretty much decided that I was going with the Kohler product I had to ensure the price I was quoted was fair so I received calls, emails and visits from Kohler and Generac dealers. Home Depot which sells Generac was also running a promotion which offered $1,000.00 off the price of their 20KW which I thought might make me have to reconsider and lean more to Generac When I received my estimates I found that the price quoted to me by the Kohler dealer (Paul Foley Electric / Generator Inc.) was very close to the Generac with the Home Depot discount. This was a very nice surprise as I felt that the generator and type of installation I had chosen was superior to the Generac offer

Paul Foley Electric I was very impressed with Paul Foley, his knowledge of the product line and his attention to detail was very obvious. After I explained what my needs were he took the time to explain all the options to me and never pressured me to buy things I did not need. I also felt that his proposal with a list of references was I nice touch and something no one else had done, it gave me confidence that I was choosing a good product, dealer, and contractor. Paul made many good suggestions like the all aluminum housing for my 20KW generator instead of the composite case. While I am sure that the composite case is very strong in my installation I had to be concerned with falling tree limbs which might crack or damage a non metal case. I was glad to have the option and am quite pleased with the strength and look of the aluminum housing

The Installation Paul Foley Electric has assembled a very good crew and I was extremely impressed with their workmanship and work ethic. All of the employees who worked at my house did excellent work and were very respectful of my property

The Installation Paul Foley electric took care of all the permits including contacting Dig Safe so that they could safely dig a trench that would bring the generator power into the house Again attention to detail like placing the dirt on tarps so that when it was time to backfill all the dirt and stone could be put back like it was before

The Installation Paul’s crew poured two concrete pads one for the generator and the second for the propane gas tanks that would be behind my tool shed. I liked the poured concrete option instead of a precast pad and was glad I had this option too. Some YouTube videos showed competitive products being installed on crushed stone or pads that were not level

The Installation The back pad had to be large enough to support two 100 gallon propane tanks. I live in a flood zone so the pad was fitted with large galvanized steel eyebolts to ensure that the two tanks could be properly strapped down and could not float away in a severe flood situation

House to Generator Connections, Very Neat! The bends and spacing on all these PVC conduit pipes is another example of Paul’s crew attention to detail. This picture does not show that they had to remove a bunch of pavers and topsoil to do this, it was all returned back to normal and you could not tell that it had been excavated

Automatic Transfer Switch Installation The ATS was mounted on flame retardant plywood and as you can see the wiring is very neat and organized All my circuits were labeled and tested This is the brains of the system and to take the wiring from a 30 year old house and redirect and organize like this impressed me

Ready to Go All inspections, Plumbing, Electrical, and Fire were completed on the first inspection, no changes or repeat visits were necessary This picture shows the two fuel tanks , the system is now ready to use I am very pleased with my generator and the installation done by Paul Foley Electric and would highly recommend them if you are considering a similar purchase or if you need other electrical work
