Using the Globe

We have learned that the globe is a model of the earth We have learned that the globe is a model of the earth. There are some important new words that will help us use the globe more successfully.

Hemisphere A half of the earth. There is a northern hemisphere, a southern hemisphere, an eastern hemisphere, and a western hemisphere.

Poles Two locations on the globe. They are on opposite ends of the globe. There is a North Pole and a South Pole. This is where the earth rotates from.

Equator An imaginary line drawn half way between the North Pole to the South Pole. It divides the earth into the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.

Latitude Imaginary lines that cut across the globe from EAST to WEST. The equator is a line of latitude.

Longitude Imaginary lines that cut across the globe from NORTH to SOUTH.
