User experience project • Torchbox was the vendor selected to assist the NGSS Records project with a user-experience effort. Torchbox has experience at Penn from several other engagements. The outcome of the effort is a set of guiding principles to employ as we move forward. NGSS User experience April 27, 2017 23

Who was engaged • We engaged a broad swath of users from the 12 Schools and many Centers in an effort to understand the needs of the community: Students Advisors Instructors We did this via interviews and online surveys. NGSS User experience April 27, 2017 24

What we learned We learned a lot. Here are some of the big things: Existing systems not smart enough to tailor experience to the wide variety of students/schools Complexity of interface often makes planning and registering seem long-winded and confusing, leaving some system tools unused Potentially useful system features and areas often remain undiscovered by users Student reluctance and confusion using InTouch tools causes increased work for advisors and admin staff NGSS User experience April 27, 2017 25

Guiding principles We’re turning this work into some guiding principles for the development of the user experience. Here is a rough draft of a few of those principles: Intuitive system with easily discoverable features Consistent patterns and design language Seamless experience with minimal friction and easy transitions Flexible interfaces providing a tailored experience for different roles Design mobile-first (where there is a user need) Allow for a seamless transition between areas Flexible interfaces - a tailored experience for different roles Reduce cognitive load - don’t confuse people with too many choices Design mobile-first (where there is a user need) Create an intuitive system, with easily discoverable features Seamless experience with minimal friction Consistent UI patterns and design language Hide certain controls/information until people interact with that area, to ensure an uncluttered interface Create clear visual distinction between UI elements and content NGSS User experience April 27, 2017 31

Where do I get more information? • Project website (www.sfs.upenn.edu/ngss). • Pennant Points • NGSS colleagues • Town hall meetings • Presentations to specific constituencies • Contact project managers: ngsspm@upenn.edu NGSS Town Hall Meeting April 27, 2017 32
