2 Clarify the Path: System
Resolve: Questions: Are our courses aligned and clearly mapped out from a student’s perspective? Do we have a clear Pathway that leads to employment opportunities in the ECE Workforce and/or that allows students to seamlessly transfer and continue their education? * We renumbered our courses to be more systematic so that students could better navigate which courses to take and which order. -More streamline -More effective in laying a stronger foundation in which to build on -Clearly outlines a start and finish

3 Clarify the Path: Guidance
Question: Resolve: 1. Is information about our program easily accessible, available and appealing to prospective students * We revamped our website to include: 1. Faculty bios and pictures 2. Course descriptions; Certificate options 3. Employment opportunities 4. Professional Development opportunities 5. Links to Advocacy groups and committees; Salary and Workforce statistics 6. Info on the COC Child Development Center

5 Why Study ECE at College of the Canyons?
• Flexible schedule: Enroll in courses at your pace   • Program has strong faculty leadership, guidance, and vision   • Program requires field work, you leave with experience in the classroom    • Courses offered in traditional classroom setting and hybrid (combination of face-to- face and online)    • Courses offered in the evening to accommodate the working student    • Rewarding professional career attainable with a degree in two  years • Certificates with a variety of emphases that can be earned in as little as two terms

6 Clarify the Path: Curriculum
Question: Resolve: 1. Is the curriculum developmentally appropriate and designed to scaffold learning? *Hold Team Meetings to review coursework, classroom activities and signature assignments -Scaffolding efforts are improved -Consistent Learning Outcomes throughout the Department

7 Enter the Path: Outreach
Question: Resolve: Are we effectively reaching out to our local high schools, feeder programs, and re-entry adults to help them select the best program option that fits their career / educational plan? *To be visible and more accessible to students: College 2 Career Day Welcome Week Partnership with TEACH Encouraged students to join FEC *To collaborate across silos to create a more unified plan of action in using campus resources (Educational Pathway Committee)

8 Enter the Path: Dual Enrollment
Question: Resolve: 1. Are we meeting the needs of our diverse student population? *Pilot ZTC and OER in key courses *Partnership with Hart School District and teaching selected coursework at Golden Valley High that supports CTE

9 Stay on the Path: Workforce Support
Questions: Resolve: Are students given opportunities to “test drive” what being a future educator will be like (e.g. fieldwork experiences, internships and apprenticeships)? Are students taught both hard and soft skill sets that are necessary for employment? Are students meeting with and interacting with ECE professionals who currently are working in the field? *Collaborate with the Center for Early Education here at COC, along with local ECE programs, and TK-12 school sites for fieldwork experiences and apprenticeships *Provide professional development workshops and presentations outside of the classroom *Incorporate guest speakers inside the classroom: parent panel; career pathway panel *Post employment opportunities in the classroom *Introduce Workforce Certifications: Teacher Permit Matrix and CBEST / CSET workshops *Incorporate observation assignments into each course

10 Stay on the Path: Student Support
Question: Resolve: 1. What resources are students given to be successful and motivated to stay on track through completion of their goals? *Provide Stipends through Child Development Training Consortium *Offer volunteer opportunities on and off campus so that students can work directly with children and families, as well as develop advocacy awareness *ZTC and OER options *Offer more On-line Courses *Non-credit courses (to enter the path as well) *Provide Career and Academic Advisement

11 Ensure Learning Question: Resolve:
1. How can we be certain that our students are learning specific content, and that they developing the skills to be intentional teachers and future educators? *Incorporate a Capstone Project *Offer opportunities to work directly with Mentor Teachers who will supervise and support students as they implement developmentally appropriate activities in a classroom environment *Meet in Course-specific Teams to discuss Signature Assignments and SLOs *Support faculty by offering / funding Professional Development opportunities so that they can be up to date with current policies as well as implement best practices
