Welcome to Parent Night! First Grade “Homework Hangout”

What is the purpose of homework? Homework is intended to allow students time to practice and extend the skills they learned during the school day. Homework is helpful to develop study skills needed later in school. Homework will keep you informed, especially at the first grade level, of what children are studying on a day-to- day basis.

When is the best time to do homework? Your child should get in the habit of doing homework at the same time every day. The time will vary depending on the child. Some children will need a break right after school to get some exercise and have a snack. Others need to start homework right away.

Where is the best place to do homework? Find a location in the house where homework will be done. The right location will depend on your child and family. Set up a homework center and make sure there is a workspace for your child. Necessary supplies should be at the center.

What supplies will be needed for the homework center? Your child will need pencils, crayons, glue, and scissors to complete homework. You may also want to keep your sight word box and spelling words at the center.

Should I check my child’s homework each night? We would like for you to check over the work. This will enable your child to make necessary corrections at that time and learn from his or her mistakes. You will also be able to see the skills we are working on at school. Your child will turn in most paperwork to their teacher the next day.

Will my child be using a computer for homework? Having computer access is not required but may be helpful for homework practice. We use several websites for reading and math practice. IREAD Moby Max ABCYa Spellingcity Prodigy

What types of homework will my child have in first grade? Reading: Sight Word Lists to #11 Reading leveled books and stories Math: Math Fact and Practice pages Math Menu/Folder Spelling: Approximately 10 words per week Examples above will be given throughout the week, not all in one day!  Homework should take approximately 10 minutes for first graders to complete.

How will we know what homework has been assigned by the teacher? Each child will have a take-home folder with a homework sheet inside. The students’ assignments and classroom information for the week will be listed on the homework sheet.

Thank you for spending time at the “Homework Hangout!” We hope you have received valuable information that you can use with your child. Thank you for attending the Parent Night!
