From 1860-1900 Cattle Drives and Wars with the Indian Tribes are what characterizes this era in Texas History. One of the most influencial American Indians was Quanah Parker was considered The Last Chief of the Comanches and eventually Assimilated into American Culture and influenced other American Indians to do so. You see these was a huge Change in Lifestyle for the American Indians when they were being forced to move onto reservations. Tasked with protecting settlers in the west were The Buffolo Soldiers who were nicknamed by the American Indians. The Buffolo Soldiers were tasked with Keeping Peace among the American Indians in the west after the Civil War. In fact The Range Wars of the 1800’s were caused by Ranchers fencing land with Barbed wire.

Settlement of Texas After the Civil War Not only did Texas has a huge availability of Land another factor that facilitated settlement in Texas was the demand for Beef in the Eastern States. How did they get this beef to the Eastern states? They used Cattle drives, one of the most famous cattle drives was the Goodnight Loving Trail and the biggest danger on these trails were possible Stampedes. After the Civil war the eastern states had gotten a taste for beef and The Demand for Beef in the East brought Rapid growth to the industry. After the Civil War, Several trails were added to support the growing cattle industry in Texas. Many German Immigrants settled in Texas because they wanted Cheap Land and Mild Climate. The Shawnee trail was the first one used and oldest.

RAILROADS Most New Cities grew up along rail lines. James Hogg started the Texas Railroad Commision Railroads were built to transport products to markets Most cotton was produced in the East Texas and most of this cotton was transported by Train.

West Texas Let’s talk about West Texas, West Texas was a huge empty frontier that didn’t have much rainfall and therefore couldn’t sustain substantial crops for growing this made it perfect for Cattle Ranching. You see this lack of Water Resources led to the development of Cattle Ranching. You see Climate Affected economic development in West Texas Because The region is too dry to support farming so ranching became more prominent. As mentioned Earlier these cattle drives ended with the introduction of Barbed Wire in the Open Ranges. The Introcution of Windmills allowed farmers and ranchers in West Texas to Irrigate crops without having access to a river.

Mexican Immigration One major influence of the Mexican Immigrants of the Culture of Texas includes: The introduction of Distinctive Architecture. Mexican Culture has brought a lot of great things to Texas. A Celebration that is in recognition of Mexican American Teenage girls achieving maturity is called a Quincenera.
