The Kingdom is Established 1 & 2 Samuel Judges teaches what happens when people “do what is right in their own eyes.” Incomplete obedience ! disobedience ! idolatry ! chastening ! oppression ! repentance ! deliverance

The Kingdom is Established 1 & 2 Samuel The theocracy failed because the people did not keep God’s laws on their own Ignorance lead to violating God’s commands even by those trying to worship Him

The Kingdom is Established - Samuel 1 Samuel 1 - 2 Samuel was the result of the Lord answering Hannah’s prayer Samuel sounds like a Hebrew phrase meaning “heard of God”

The Kingdom is Established - Samuel 1 Samuel 2 -3 Hannah had 3 more sons & 2 daughters Eli was not a good father, his sons were evil God revealed Himself to Samuel when he was still a small boy

The Kingdom is Established - Samuel 1 Samuel 4 They treated the ark of the Lord as if it was a magical charm Israel was defeated & the ark captured Eli & his sons died just as had been prophesied

The Kingdom is Established - Samuel 1 Samuel 5-7 The Philistines now had the Lord God on their hands Their god, Dagon – an idol half fish & half man – fell over before the ark of the Lord Dagon fell over again, with hands & head cut off

The Kingdom is Established - Samuel 1 Samuel 1 The Lord chastened the Philistines with tumors and many of them died The Philistine returned the ark to Israel along with guilt offerings of gold. The cows went directly to Beth- shemesh They defeated the Philistines

The Kingdom is Established 1 Samuel 8 Samuel’s sons were evil, the people demanded a king so they could be like all the nations around them Israel was rejecting God in demanding a king Deuteronomy 17:14-20 prophesied there would be kings and gave instructions to them

The Kingdom is Established - Saul 1 Samuel 9-10 Saul was from Benjamin – the smallest tribe & he was from the least of its families. Saul, was a head taller than everyone else, yet he still started off well demonstrating great humility

The Kingdom is Established - Saul 1 Samuel 11-12 Saul had his first victory over the Ammonites at Jabesh-gilead The people and the king would do well only they obeyed & followed the Lord

The Kingdom is Established - Saul 1 Samuel 13 Saul was 40 years old when he began to reign and he reigned for 32 years. Saul’s first great moral failure was not waiting for Samuel, but making the sacrifices himself Saul would not have an enduring kingdom.

The Kingdom is Established - Saul 1 Samuel 14 Jonathan defeated a Philistine garrison. An earthquake frightened the Philistines Saul attacked (600 vs. 36,000) They won despite Saul’s foolish vow

The Kingdom is Established – Saul 1 Samuel 15 Saul’s second great moral failure was not utterly destroying Amalek Saul falsely claimed to have obeyed He made excuses & blamed others He was a failure - A leader must lead, not follow out of fear

The Kingdom is Established – Saul 1 Samuel 15 To obey is better than sacrifice Rebellion is as the sin of divination - seeking a source of guidance other than the Lord Insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry - rejecting the Lord to follow the direction of another

The Kingdom is Established – Saul 1 Samuel 15 Saul still sought to be honored Saul was rejected as king. It would be given to another.

The Kingdom is Established - David 1 Samuel 16 David is the youngest son of Jesse of the tribe of Judah Samuel anointed David king before his brothers & the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily David demonstrated humility, though anointed king, he became Saul’s musician

The Kingdom is Established - David 1 Samuel 17 David demonstrated courage & trust of God in taking up Goliath’s challenge Goliath was a trained soldier, fully equipped and who was between 9 & 11 feet tall. David defeated Goliath in the name of the Lord of Hosts

The Kingdom is Established - David 1 Samuel 18-27 Jonathan & David became fast friends for life Saul became jealous and sought to kill David many times David would not kill Saul even when he had the opportunity two different times

The Kingdom is Established - David 1 Samuel 24-31 – 2 Samuel 1-2 David would trust the Lord to remove Saul and establish his kingdom at the right time. When Saul & three of his sons were killed, David mourned and honored them

The Kingdom is Established - David 2 Samuel 3-6 David was made king of the tribe of Judah, but had war with Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, for seven years. David captured Jerusalem from the Jebusites and made it his capital. David brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem on the second attempt by doing it correctly

The Kingdom is Established - David 2 Samuel 7 God made a covenant with David that included the promise of an eternal throne to one of his descendants David was a great worshiper of God and wrote about half of the Psalms in the Bible

The Kingdom is Established - David 2 Samuel 13-20, 24 Among David’s flaws was lack of rebuke to his children. This resulted in fratricide & civil war Pride led David to make a census which the Lord judged with a plague that killed 70,000

The Kingdom is Established - David 2 Samuel 11 David coveted Bathsheba, committed adultery with her, lied to Uriah, & had Uriah murdered David stole Bathsheba by making her his wife. All this dishonored God and his parents

The Kingdom is Established - David 2 Samuel 12 David admitted his sin without excuse when confronted by Nathan and accepted God’s punishments See Psalm 51 David was a man after God’s own heart All future kings would be compared to David
