2 Examples of Faith - David
When read about the life of David from 1 Samuel 16 through 1 Kings 2. When we read about David we read of his successes and his failures. In all of the pictures of the life of David we read of a man who put God first in his life.

1 Samuel 17:37 – Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” David’s faith was evident as a young boy.

The difference between Goliath and David was laid out by Saul. 1 Sam. 17:33 – “…you are a youth and he a man of war from his youth.” David equates Goliath to just another animal that God will deliver into his hand. 1 Sam. 17:25 – David questions the men of war about the reward for defeating Goliath.

1 Sam. 17:28 – his brother questions his motives for being there 1 Sam. 17:42-49 – David defeats Goliath

In his conversation with Goliath, David made several statements that convey his trust. Vs. 45 – “I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel…” Vs. 46 – “This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand…” Vs. 46 – “all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” Vs. 47 – “the Lord does not save with the sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s…”

While Goliath had the armies of Israel dreadfully afraid, vs. 24, David was not afraid because he knew that God was with him. Rom. 8:31 – If God is for us, who can be against us? Matt. 28:20 – Do you really believe that Jesus will be with you every day?

2. 2 Samuel 12:13 – “I have sinned against the Lord.” David repented. David did not try to deflect his sin. He did not try to blame someone else. He did not offer excuses. Psalm 51 – the depth of David’s repentance is revealed in the psalm

3. 1 Samuel 13:13 - The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart… This is who God sought to lead His people as king. Acts 13:22 - … ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’

What does this mean? How can one have a heart that is after God’s own will?

1 Sam. 24:4-7 – David was troubled in his heart for simply cutting off the corner of Saul’s robe, God’s anointed 1 Kings 9:4 – David walked before God in integrity of heart and in uprightness to do all that God commanded 1 Kings 11:4 – David’s heart was loyal to God 1 Kings 15:5 – David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord Judges 17:6, 21:25 – everyone did what was right in their own eyes Jer. 17:9 – the heart is deceitful

David’s faith was really based on one thing; the condition of his heart. David’s faith was a complex arrangement that he regarded in all aspects of his life.

When David trusted God he was able to defeat the lion and the bear. He did not run to do battle with Goliath, he ran to defeat Goliath. When God told David that he sinned David repented.

It is summed up by God when He said that David was a man after His own heart. David considered God, the power of God, the word of God, the commands of God to be righteous. He considered God to be holy and just and the ways of God were to David, life.

This all points to the heart of David. Matt. 15:19-20 – these proceeded out of the heart of David and he was defiled 2 Sam. 12:13 – David repents and God forgave Psalm 51:17 – the sacrifices of God are a broken and contrite spirit and heart Rom. 12:1-2 – we are to be a living sacrifice

16 Examples of Faith - David
Matt. 12:35-37 – David was a good tree with a good heart that brought forth good things and was ultimately justified in the sight of God When we give our heart to God, we will then give ourselves to God and His service. Can we have Davidic faith? Absolutely yes!
