The Jolly Postman! Year R Term 3 Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Going for Goals – reflecting on things that we are good at and things we would like to get better at. Setting own targets for development. What lessons can be learned from some fairytale stories? E.g. Not talking to strangers like Little Red Riding Hood! Setting up whole class reward system – winning gems in the jar. Further developing independent skills – keeping the classroom tidy, having own monitor jobs and resolving own conflicts. Physical Development: Fine motor control – developing pencil control and grip. Using cursive letter formation to write our names and other familiar words. Gymnastics unit of work – Creating shapes on the apparatus. Games (with Mrs Wells) – Hoops and target games. Recreating the journey of the Jolly Postman on his bicycle and delivering the letters. Creating journey in the playground. Play dough, building, cutting and sticking, tracing. Communication and Language: Listening to stories with increasing attention and recall. Exploring aspects of stories such as beginning, middle and end, characters and settings. Establishing ‘knee buddies’ and discussing our ideas and learning with them. Presenting our stories and songs in our class assembly – using a loud voice. Storytelling – Red Riding Hood. Using actions, props and story maps. Paired and small group discussions – building on each other’s ideas, listening and responding. The Jolly Postman! Literacy: Letters and sounds – recap all previously learned letter sounds. Beginning phase 3 – letter patterns sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa. Segmenting and blending simple words – using for reading and writing simple sentences. Reading and spelling tricky words – he, she, was, my, you, they. Sharing stories contained in Jolly Postman – Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretal, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk. Creating story maps and telling stories by heart. Creating story boards and writing stories. Reading simple stories and phonics texts. Writing – a letter to post to a friend, thought and speech bubbles for characters, wanted poster for the wolf, instructions to make a gingerbread house. . Mathematics: Exploring time – days of the week and months of the year. Thinking about what happens at points during the year. Making a calendar. Exploring the ‘teen’ numbers – creating them using dienes and understanding the place value of the ten. Addition and Subtraction work – counting sets and working out practically. Beginning to record. Missing numbers in a sequence. Door numbers. Beginning to look at Odd and Even numbers. Ordinal numbers – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. Sorting into sets, counting each set and presenting ideas using a graph. (ICT link) Learn its: 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 2+1, 2+3. Counting in 10s and 5s. Understanding the World: RE Week – Celebrations unit of work – Happy New Year! Celebrations around the world. Using ICT – 2Graph to present data, typing skills and using capital and lower case letters, playing number games. Creating map of the journey of the Jolly Postman, drawing the map and using directional language. Sending the BeeBot to a given house on the fairytale map. Cooking – flapjack, gingerbread houses, grandma’s fruit cakes. Exploring materials – creating a basket for Red Riding Hood to take to Grandmas, a house for Wolf to blow down. Visiting the post office, buying a stamp and posting a letter to a friend. Expressive Arts and Design: Da Capo Scheme of work – rhythm and pattern activities and learning simple songs. Role play – Post Office and Cottage to retell stories. Acting out using props, masks. Creating puppets to retell stories. Instrument work – adding sound effects to the stories. E.g. Tip toeing wolf, woodcutter chopping down trees etc. Drama games – freeze framing and hot seating. Interviewing characters in the story and getting into role. Using junk modelling to create a giant map of Jolly Postman’s journey – creating each house. Displaying. Art linked to RE unit of work – creating Holi colour pictures, chinese lanterns etc. Year R Term 3
