Physical Development:
Games lessons – Friday mornings with Mrs Wells.
Gymnastics – bending, stretching, curling. Using the apparatus safely.
Getting ready for Sports Day. Practise running in the lanes, obstacle courses.
Big building outside – building own special places.
Sewing – using a needle carefully holding between our fingers.
Daily handwriting in the mornings – individual letter formation, then beginning looking at joins.
Various gross and fine motor control activities as chosen through child-initiated provision.
Communication and Language:
Joining in small group and whole class discussions, being willing to share own ideas and opinions.
Planning a visit to the beach with our year 6 buddies where we will study the features of the environment.
Listen to what other children have to say and respond appropriately to them by asking questions or sharing own points of view.
Learning the story of The Hungry Caterpillar for a whole class retelling.

Literacy:
Letters and Sounds – continue phase 4 – consonant blends, syllables and reading and writing sentences accurately. Recap phase 3 – vowel patterns ai, ee, igh, oa, oi, ar, ur, er, ear, ure, ow, or in order to secure knowledge.
Focus on simple punctuation – capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and a full stop at the end.
Reading – a range of non-fiction texts about minibeasts and pond life. Stories linked to topic and taken from the reading scheme.
Children begin to apply their reading skills to texts outside the reading scheme.
Writing – minibeast riddles, a diary entry from historical perspective, instructions of how to look after the environment, a letter to our new teacher.
Mathematics:
Continue learn-its for Big Maths Beat That. Learning to count in groups of 2, 5 and 10.
Doubling and halving quantities. Filling in missing spots on ladybirds.
Symmetry – butterflies.
Using number lines to jump on or back to carry out addition and subtraction problems.
Magnetic fishing – identifying numbers and working out how many more to get to 10.
Measuring the capacity of different containers.
Introduction to telling the time. Ordering events of the day and looking at the clock.
Using shapes to build or create and then identifying properties of shapes – how many corners, edges, faces?
Reading 2 digit numbers.
Understanding the World:
RE Week – What makes a place special? Investigating different religious buildings. Visit to St. Laurence’s Church.
What makes something living? What do living things need in order to survive?
The life cycle of a frog.
Looking at features of our own immediate environment and at the coast. Talking about what we notice. Thinking about why it is important to look after the environment.
An in-depth study of South Korea as part of the schools world cup week. Thinking about Korean lifestyle, art, culture, food, children etc.
Looking at a period of time from the past as part of schools history week – The Romans.
School trip to Langford Lakes.
ICT – games, word processing.
Expressive Arts and Design:
Role play – The River Cafe.
Looking at Henri Matisse picture of the snail. Using same techniques to create our own minibeast picture.
