Welcome to the Arbor View High School Band Family! Freshman parent orientation – march 6, 2017

WHY ARE WE HERE TONIGHT? Provide an overview of the Arbor View High School Band Program and answer any questions you may have Key Topics What is the Arbor View Band Program? WHAT IS THE ARBOR VIEW AGGIE BAND? Marching Band – We require all students that participate in marching band to be apart of our other performing groups. (PE II Waiver for all students that complete the Marching Band Season) Marching Band includes: Marching Band Competitions Football Pep Band Basketball Pep Band Colorguard – Colorguard is a year long course that includes Marching Band and Winterguard. (PE II Waiver for all students that complete the Marching Band Season) Auditions are in May preceded by clinics Two Colorguard camps in July Concert Band & Wind Symphony Will meet during the school after Marching Band Season Auditions will take place at that time Both bands will go to district festival as well as play in 3 other concerts during the school year Jazz Band Two Jazz Bands Both Jazz Bands with perform 2-3 concerts at the school each year Jazz Bands do not normally practice after school, but do have community performances and out of town festivals and competitions they are invited to throughout the year

The importance of band Band teachers important life skills – Dedication, Teamwork, Commitment, Communication, Trust, Responsibility, Accountability, Time Management, Respect Academic Excellence Band Students are usually top scholars at their schools They average 62 points higher on SAT test Studies show direct correlation between music and academic and personal achievement Band builds positive self-worth

How much time does it take? Marching Band Rehearsals Early bird will give each student an extra credit and will be 4 days a week throughout marching band season. 6:50 – 7:50 AM Rehearses Tuesday from 4:30 – 8:30 PM. From the beginning of the school year through November Game Days – after school from 4:30 – 5:15 PM Colorguard Colorguard rehearsals for marching band will be the same schedule as the winds and percussion Winterguard will rehearse once a week from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and 2 – 3 Saturdays before competition season Winter Percussion Drumline will rehearse once per week and 2 – 3 Saturdays before the competition season Football / Basketball Games The full marching band attends all home varsity football and basketball games and some of the away games. Football games are on Friday and occasionally Thursday nights. Basketball will be dependent on their game schedule. **Please note: All rehearsals and performances are required attendance.

Summer schedule Marching Band Summer Camp Colorguard – 2 Camps in July TBA Marching Band – July 31 through August 9 More camp information will be once available

How much does it cost? Band (Marching/Concert) - $570.00 (Estimated) This fee includes band camp, transportation, cargo trucks, rentals, fuel for rentals, instructional staff, equipment needs, equipment replacement, competition entry fees, show design, drill design, entertainment on trips. Colorguard (Fall/Winter) - $1300.00 (Estimated) Fall - $625.00 / Winterguard - $675.00 This fee includes marching band and Winterguard Winter Percussion - $675.00 (Estimated) Jazz Band - $300.00 (Estimated) Includes all festivals entry fees and travel arrangements for the group Hawaii Trip 2018 - $2100 (Estimated) Optional 4 Nights/5 Days Spring Break 2018 or Memorial Day 2018 Miscellaneous Cost – Other expenses will occur throughout the school year. Typical expenses include marching shoes, gloves, concert attire/formal wear.

How Much does it cost? Band Fee Payments You can wait for the due dates to pay the full amounts due, but we encourage you to make payments each month leading up to the deadlines. During the Summer you can visit the school 7:00 – 1:00 PM to make a payment. We take all band payments in the band room or you may pay the school banker directly. Payments can be made in the form of cash, check, money order and credit card. Credit card payments are only taken on avhsbands.org/shop Paying with credit card does charge 2.5% per transaction

Marching band uniforms Uniform fitting will be the week before band camp More information will be sent out once available Uniform Requirements Black spandex shirt and shorts (full shoulder must be covered – Sweat ruins the uniforms) Long black athletic socks Gloves – All students will receive 2 pairs free

Charms – your lifeline to the band! It is very important we have your correct contact information in Charms Two emails you check frequently Phone numbers and mailing addresses Trouble logging into your Charms account? Contact Mr. Shaw at shawh@nv.ccsd.net All 8th graders will be included in Charms soon! We will be adding all students to the proper band class and updating fees starting in July This is our primary means of communication for mass emails and our newsletter – Otherwise you will have to depend on your student for information….

Band Parent meetings The best way to get the latest news, meet other band parents, and communicate with the board and directors General meetings are normally held the 2nd Tuesday of each month. (Look on the calendar to confirm the date) Place: Arbor View High School Band Room Time: 6:30 PM No meetings will take place in December, June or July.

Fundraising and volunteer opportunities Levy Restaurants @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway / T-Mobile Arena We sell concessions and merchandise at the events It is a great way to raise money towards band fees (Up to 30 events per year!) All volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer All volunteers must have a TAM card (Alcohol training) to work either venue Smith’s Community Rewards Sign up with the band and every time you go shopping the band gets a portion of your bill! Look on avhsbands.org for more details! Fundraisers Throughout the Year We plan to do several more fundraisers throughout the year big and small Restaurant fundraisers will be at least once per month – It is a great way to hang out with other band families! We would love your help developing and creating these fundraisers!

Sponsorship Sponsorship plays a very important role in our program We are always looking for new sponsors and that’s where students and parent come in We all know business owners and managers of businesses – those are the people we need help connecting with! We are currently working on a new sponsorship program for the 2017 – 2018 school year! Please look for more information soon!
