INFORMATION FOR PARENTS YEAR 6 SATs INFORMATION FOR PARENTS www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/SATS.html You may find this website useful – we did!

What are they? SATs are tests given at the end of each Key Stage to show progress In Year 6 they are called National Tests Children are now expected to achieve a level 4b

What do SATs tests show? show what pupils have learnt and retained during the key stage. strengths and weaknesses.

Can my child fail a SATs test? NO It will just show what they have learned; what they can do.

What are the children tested on? all of the work they have covered in all year groups so far. Maths, English and Science (past paper) SATs results rarely hold any surprises – we hope!

What form will the tests take? MONDAY 11th MAY TUESDAY 12th MAY WEDNESDAY 13th MAY THURSDAY 14th MAY FRIDAY 15th MAY Levels 3-5 Reading Test 60 mins Level 6 Reading Test 10 mins reading time 50 mins to complete the test Levels 3-5 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Paper 1 :45 mins – short answers Paper 2 : 15 mins – spelling task Level 6 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Paper 1 : extended task – 30 mins Paper 2 : short answer questions – 20 mins Paper 3 : spelling task – 10 mins Levels 3-5 mental mathematics test – 20 mins Levels 3-5 mathematics Paper 1 – 45 mins Levels 3-5 mathematics Paper 2 – 45 mins (No calculator) Level 6 mathematics Paper 1 – 30 mins Level 6 mathematics Paper 2 – 30 mins Science Selected sample schools only Please Note : Children selected for Level 6 will be entered for ALL papers

How will the results be reported? Maths and reading sent away for marking as soon as each test has been completed. Returned by first week in July we compile the reports for parents (in addition to the end of year reports). state the test level and a teacher assessment compared to the national and the school averages. assigned one level Painsley use an average of test (raw scores), teacher assessments to group the children

Writing! Opted to internally mark and then moderate with the other schools in the federation Writing tasks delivered weekly and levelled regularly If their result doesn’t match teacher assessment, other work from the year can be used as evidence External moderation if selected

What do the results of all the tests mean? The results show whether or not your child has reached the expected National Curriculum level for their year group. The Government sets national targets for performance at the end of Key Stage 2. The results reported in the local newspaper are for the whole year group and do not mention individual children. We are able to look at your child’s progress from Year 2, rather than simply the attainment they achieve.

What is teacher assessment? A summary giving a level for each attainment target in English, Mathematics and Science.

What do the levels mean? An average Year 6 - attain Level 4 Level 3 is below expectations and Level 5 is above expectations. Your child may well achieve different levels in different subjects

How to help your child Make sure they get enough sleep How to help your child Make sure they get enough sleep. Make sure they eat breakfast. It is important they arrive at school on time. Don’t try and frighten them into revising – encourage them and tell them they can do well. Support them with homework. Please help them not to panic! Encourage them to ask the teacher if they are unsure about anything – before or during the test. Explain that the SATs are a way of showing what they know.

How can I help at home? Support with homework: - Learning spellings - Enjoying books/reading to your child/listening to your child read or discuss his/her book - Times tables (by the end of yr 5 children should have a good grasp of all the times tables & division facts) - Encouraging your child to attempt the extension homework - Visit your local library Read books around the main topic Access to the internet for research & educational sites Encouraging your child to present homework to a high standard Finding a good space & time to encourage good habits

E-mails – can I please have your e-mail address? I would like to be able to e-mail parents with achievements without children knowing. Ideally this would give parents the opportunity to ask about work and share in their child’s success. Each e-mail sent out would be worth 10 stamps (2 House Points), as well as the stamps issued for that particular piece of work.

Sanctions Clear expectations and classroom rules Positive reinforcement is always used first Classes individual discipline procedures New day, new start!
