Welcome to the KS2 SATs Presentation Aims of the meeting:   To inform you about the Year 6 SATs   To discuss ways in which you can support your child’s learning

What are SATs?   Standard Attainment Tests, which all pupils take at the end of Key Stage Two. They measure achievement in Reading, Maths, and English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.   Writing is Teacher Assessed (moderated internally and externally) based on work across the year.   The tests begin on Monday 9 th May 2016.   The tests are marked externally and are reported in the end of year report.   No level 6 or higher papers (incorporated into one Test).

Why and what has changed?   A new national curriculum was introduced in 2014. As a result, the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) has changed the tests so that they assess the new curriculum.   Pupils will take the new tests for the first time in May 2016.   As part of the national curriculum review, levels have been abolished.   Schools will no longer be reporting levels at the end of the year, instead every pupil registered will receive:   a raw score (number of raw marks awarded)   a scaled score   confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard

What are SATs used for?   The results, together with teacher assessment, are usually used to set children in Year 7. Most schools will re- assess children for baseline purposes but this will be based on the year 6 curriculum.

The English Assessment   Reading test One hour reading and answering time   EGPAS test – English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test - 45 minutes for question and approximately 20 minutes for spelling

Reading Comprehension: There will be a selection of question types:   Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’   Retrieval, e.g. ‘How would you get from the spacecraft to the hotel?’   Short constructed response, e.g. ‘How did Anousheh’s trip make history?’   Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Explain how Anousheh felt about being in space that day.’   Explain how the descriptions of the iguanodons in this paragraph support the idea that they were both inoffensive and brutes. (3 marks)

English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling:   Questions will refer to both children’s knowledge of grammatical terms (such as pronoun and conjunction) and use of language in the right context.   Some will require children to put in the appropriate punctuation marks to clauses or sentences or to use a particular sentence structure.

Paper 1 – Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary – Example Questions  Starter question: Write the contracted form of the underlined words: That decision does not seem fair.  Challenging question: Circle all the determiners in the sentence below: Two apple trees screened the open windows on one side.

The Maths Assessment   Paper 1 – Arithmetic : 30 minutes Focus on number and calculation skills. 40 questions. Starter questions: More challenging questions: 979 + 100 = 2331 ÷ 37 = 1,440 ÷ 12 = ¾ + 7/12 = 1.28 × 100 = 95% of 240 = 20% of 1,500 =

The Maths Assessment Papers 2 & 3 : Mathematical Reasoning: 40 minutes each paper.   Solving problems e.g. purchasing things in a shop, or dealing with measurements such as weight or area.   Geometry and statistics, as well as using arithmetic and number knowledge to solve problems.

The Maths Assessment Papers 2 & 3 : example questions:  Starter question: A pack of paper has 150 sheets. 4 children each take 7 sheets. How many sheets of paper are left in the pack?  Challenging question: One gram of gold costs £32.94. What is the cost of half a kilogram of gold?

Marking and Results   Once the results are returned to the school, they will be reported to you.   Your child’s score will be converted to a scaled score to allow it to be compared to others’. Scaled scores will normally range between 80 and 130. Although we are unsure of the range.   The scale will be set so that reaching a score of 100 will indicate that your child is working at the expected standard for the end of Key Stage 2.

Marking and Results   Higher scores indicates advanced attainment,   Lower scores suggests your child may need some additional support to catch up with his or her peers.   Scores will be provided for reading, mathematics, and grammar, punctuation and spelling.   School will report on other subjects such as science and writing, as well as the more general report comments.

Preparing for the tests in school We are giving children opportunities to: We are giving children opportunities to:   work in small groups to target areas for development (booster classes)   work independently – to see if they can apply skills   see the layout and design of sample tests.   complete work in a given time – getting used to speed   Practise of SATs style questions.

Timetable: Monday 9 May 2016Key stage 2 English reading test, reading booklet and associated answer booklet. Tuesday 10 May 2016Key stage 2 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Paper 1, short answer questions. Key stage 2 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Paper 2, spelling. 18 Ways to help at home:   Improve their mental maths skills by asking them quick fire questions, e.g. 67+ 43   Ensure your child knows their times table and division facts and then extend this to 30 x 6, 420÷7, etc.   Practise key spelling rules and words.   Reading a wide variety of materials and asking them questions about what they have read to improve their inference/deduction skills.   Ensure they complete their homework and check they have done their best.   Ensure they are in school as much as possible.   Encourage them to do their best!

Useful Revision Materials and Websites   CGP Workbooks KS2 SATs (new curriculum).   Websites: www.satspapers.co.uk   Primary resources   BBC education - bitesize   Woodlands Junior School/ Kent   www.tes.co.uk   www.compare4kids/numeracy/literacy
