1 Welcome SATs parents meeting 2016

2 What are SATs? Standard Assessment Tests.
Compulsory for all children at the end of Year 6. Tests in: reading, GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling) and mathematics. Science is assessed by the class teacher

3 CHANGES To KS2 SATs in 2016? In the summer term 2016, children in Year 6 will be the first to take the new SATs papers. These test in English and math reflect the new national curriculum. There will also be a completely new marking scheme to replace the existing national curriculum levels. The tests will be both set and marked externally.

4 Key stage 2 reading The reading test will be a paper with questions based on three passages of text that are unrelated. They have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering - number the events below True or false – The children walked to school. True or False Find and copy – Find and copy one word that suggests… Short constructed responses – Look at the sentence that beings ‘Once upon a time.’ How does the writer increase the tensions throughout this paper? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.

5 Key stage 2 GPS This paper consist of two parts:
GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION 45 minute paper requiring short answers Selected responses – identify the adjective in the sentence below Constructed response – Complete the sentence below SPELLING TEST Approximately 15 – 20 minutes Aural spelling test of 20 words.

8 Key stage 2 Maths This paper consist of three papers
Arithmetic (Paper 1) 30 minutes Reasoning Paper (2 and 3) 40 minutes Calculation based Drawing a shape, completing a table or chart Problem solving

11 Math Paper 2 and 3: Reasoning

12 What about writing? Your child’s writing is assessed against national standards by their class teacher. The grade that they are given is then moderated by the local authority.

13 What happens to the results?
Results are sent to secondary schools; some use the results for streaming. Almost all secondary schools test children themselves at the start of year 7. Results of the SATs are used to place schools in a league table. They show the progress children have made from KS1. The results show the great effort the children have made in their learning!

14 How will they be run? Children will sit the exams either in the upstairs hall or in their classroom. You will be told where your child will be taking their exams before the date of the tests. They will be invigilated by members of the senior leadership team and class teachers.

15 Timetable This is the timetable for the SATs week. You have each been given a copy to take home. Day Papers Monday 9th May Reading Tuesday 10th May GPS Wednesday 11th May Paper 1: Arithmetic Paper; Paper 2: Reasoning Thursday 12th May Paper 3: Reasoning

16 How can I help my child? Talk to them about their homework and support them with revision from their CGP books Make sure they get an early night. Make sure they eat a good breakfast in the morning of the SATs. However, we will be offering free breakfast for the year 6s on the morning of the SATs Give them plenty of praise and encouragement; it’s hard work doing all those tests!

17 Monitoring visits 10% of schools will receive a monitoring visit, either from the STA or from the local authority (LA).
