Mrs. Matheny’s Class Newsletter Look what we are learning… Mark Your Calendars We have such a great group of boys and girls in our class. They have been working so hard to learn the rules and expectations of kindergarten. I am so proud of how quickly they are learning our procedures and they are making new friends. In reading, we have begun the Letterland Phonics program. We are learning the name of letters and their sounds. I will share more with you about Letterland soon! We are learning the difference between capital and lower-case letters, and words. We will learn the sight words: I, a, see, my, can, the, like. In writing, we are learning the correct way to hold our pencil and how to write our first names. We are learning how to draw a person. In math, we are learning the numbers 0 – 10. The children should be able to recognize the numeral, write the numeral and show how many to match the numeral with counters. We will practice counting to 30 and positional words. In Science, we will learn about apples and how we use our five senses. In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about our new classroom environment and get to know one another as friends. We will also learn about Johnny Appleseed. Sept. 5: No school Sept. 9, 16, 30: School store is open! Sept. 14: Believe fundraiser ends, money due Sept. 15 Hispanic Family Night Sept. 16 Picture Day Sept. 19 Skate Night Sept. 20 @ 7:00 PTO meeting for all interested parents Sept. 22 Curriculum Night and Open House Plan to come visit our classroom and hear information about our kindergarten goals. Sept. 23: Early Release Day Sept. 28: Progress Reports Sept. 30 Box top contest ends Reading contest ends September Birthdays Happy Birthday this month to … Nevaeh on September 2nd Thank you! Thank you so much for all the school supplies you have sent in to our classroom! We really appreciate your generosity! If you have not done so, please remember to send in your child’s $4.00 for their class t-shirt. We will wear those for special days, field trips, field day, etc. Thank you for returning your child’s red folder each day! It is our communication tool! I will check it each morning as your child enters the classroom to see if you have anything to communicate with me for the day. If you need to change your child’s transportation home and you did not put a note in the red folder, please let the office know and they will contact me. Extra Information… We have been learning about my rubber band discipline policy and how we can earn or lose rubber bands. I will begin using Class Dojo to track rubber bands/points this week. Please see the attached sheet on how to log on and see your child’s dojo points. I will update Class dojo points at the end of each school day! You will also receive my Shining Students report on Fridays! If you have any questions, please use Class Dojo to message me or email me at sherri.matheny@kcs.k12.nc.us, or call me 704-933-2831.
