Class organisation Pupils are taught a topic based curriculum (IPC) including Literacy within their own class Pupils are grouped in Year 5 and 6 for mathematics Maths groups are based on previous attainment and teacher assessment, and will be monitored constantly
IPC Current topic – History AD 900- Ancient Maya (History, Art and Music) Other topics – What a Wonderful World (Geography), Going Global (Geography and Science), The Athlete (PE and Science)

How to help at home… Times table system – cards to take home and tested in school Homework – set weekly via Mathletics, ‘paper’ homework Targets – set every half-term We will involve parents at an early stage if we feel your child would benefit from additional support and practice for a particular concept/method
Literacy The Year 5 and 6 team plan the Literacy lessons together. With the introduction of the IPC where appropriate, we endeavour to link our Literacy work into our topic, for example during ‘History AD 900’ we are studying Mayan Folktales as well as writing instructions linked to the Mayan ball games.
Big Writing Every fortnight in class Talk homework issued prior to this (Wednesday) – encourage children to talk about their ideas, they do not need to write them down VCOP – Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation
Guided reading and Handwriting Guided Reading once a fortnight with the Teacher Handwriting is ongoing throughout all lessons with one/two focused session(s) each week
Spelling New Curriculum personal spelling list IEP spelling list Spelling focus is changed every 3 weeks – lists will be given out with a general test at the end. Your child will be allocated 5 spellings within the spelling pattern to learn. Any extras are a bonus.
Reading comprehension groups All children will be grouped according to their end of year target – groups will be monitored constantly Focus will be reading comprehension skills and different question types Every fortnight
Homework Weekly numeracy (Mathletics/Paper homework) Weekly Literacy/Topic (in Home Learning book). Homework will always be consolidating skills which have been taught that week. Sometimes homework may be to research in preparation for the following week.
Diaries Please check and sign diaries each week Children are encouraged to read 5 times a week to earn a merit – please sign/initial each time. Children do not have to read to an adult but are responsible for getting their diary signed. Notes for staff in the diary – make sure the children know!
Being organised! Book bags, diaries, reading books, homework, spellings, PE kits, lunch boxes, coats, fleeces, jumpers…! Names in clothing especially PE kit Working towards independence – My Mum/Dad forgot… is not accepted as an excuse!
Experiences & Extra curricular activities We try to organise a visit/visitor each half-term to enrich the curriculum 28th September – Year 6 Safety Zone 2nd October – Archaeologist Thank you for your contributions and support Residential trip – Caythorpe Court – next week! Sporting activities – Football, cricket, basketball, dance, athletics Other activities – Christmas and Summer performances and music performances.
