1 Important information for parents
Year 6 Important information for parents

2 Welcome to Year Six The culmination of a lot of hard work by everyone involved: parents, children and staff. The last year of primary school and for some parents a first time experience. An important year before an equally important transition to secondary education. A chance to further mature and grow in the way the children have been encouraged to on their journey through the school. To the children, a very quick year with a lot to do (so they tell me). A preparation for the responsibilities, freedom and challenges to come.

3 P.E. and Games Weather permitting, we aim to do one indoor P.E. and one outdoor games lesson per week. These are on: Monday and Friday (the indoor and outdoor day may vary). Outdoor kit: Summer – the standard school blue kit and trainers / Winter – the standard school blue kit with suitable over-coverings to guard against the cold. On occasion, children may (but don’t have to) wear clothing appropriate to a specific sport – e.g. football boots and / or shin pads. I’ll tell the children if this is appropriate prior to the sessions. Indoor kit: the school blue P.E. kits and pumps or bare feet – i.e. no trainers. Deteriorating weather during winter may mean outdoor sessions have to be substituted with indoor ones. This shouldn’t cause kit problems. I’d like the children take kits home and wash them weekly (please!)

5 Topics Covered during the year
In history / geography, the children will be studying: how the local area was changed by the Industrial Revolution (and also how this changed the world), Ancient Greece and how life and geography in Brazil compares / contrasts with that in the U.K. In science, the children will study: living things and plants, animals and their habitats, the human body, light, electricity and evolution and inheritance.

6 Homework Maths and English (given on Monday and handed in the following Monday). This NEEDS to be signed by a parent of guardian. Reading – I tell the children (and I really mean it), reading is the most important academic activity in school. It has the most impact on their learning across the whole curriculum and is directly linked to progress. It’s the area I most need parental support in. Practically, that means monitoring reading is done daily and that reading records are filled in and brought to school to be checked. Reading journals must be filled in and handed-in on Mondays. Spelling – to be given out on Wednesday and tested the following Wednesday. Multiplication and division tables (as applicable - i.e. if a child doesn’t know them). The expectation is multiplication tables are know by the end of Year 4. From this Year the requirement is up to know all tables up to 12 x 12 OFF BY HEART.

7 Homework (Pre-SATs) The homework given may (and almost certainly will) change for that listed on the previous slide in the run-up to the end-of-year tests. It is hard to give a definitive description of these changes, as they may vary year-to-year or child-to-child, depending on the needs noticed during in-class work and test preparation. Examples from previous years might include: Targeted maths and / or English work (given by a variety of teachers who may work with your child) Revision books Test paper corrections SPAG work (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) Facts to learn in preparation for in-class preparatory tests etc.
