Times Tables Times tables will be tested weekly and cards changed as appropriate. Certificates are given for completed cards. Mathletics has several excellent activities to support learning of times tables, including sing-along tunes (‘Times Tables Toons’). The National Curriculum states that by the end of Y4 all children are expected to know the 11 and 12 times tables.

Mathletics Mathletics.co.uk is a successful website for motivating and helping children to improve their Maths skills. All children at MPPS have a secure user name and password to access the website stuck into their diaries (usually on page 15). There will be either Mathletics homework or paper homework set each week.

Reading Children can choose from fiction or non-fiction books, brought from home or borrowed from the school. Some children will be reading books from the Oxford Reading Scheme. Guided Reading Groups – your child will read with their teacher once a fortnight. Reading at home needs to be recorded in diaries and signed. These will be checked weekly and a full merit given for children who have read 5 or more times at home.

Spelling Children have a personal spelling list taken from the NC Y3/4 required spelling list. Once your child is able to spell all of these correctly, they can then choose misspelt words from their own work. A ‘Spelling Buddy’ system in class will operate to help with this. Group spellings which include taught spelling patterns will be issued every three weeks and tested accordingly.

Big Writing Big Writing has proved very successful and gives children the opportunity to write extended independent pieces of work. Big Writing usually happens every other Friday in Years 3 & 4. Big Writing talk homework will be sent home just before the Big Writing, on a Wednesday. Talk Homework with your child is intended to be a ten minute activity and there is no need to write anything down. Please initial your child’s talk homework or diary.
