A Map of India

A Map of India The modern nation of India (also known by its ancient Hindi name, Bharat) is smaller than the Indian Empire formerly ruled by Britain. Burma (now Myanmar), a mainly Buddhist country lying to the east, was administratively detached from India in 1937. Ten years later, when Britain granted independence to the peoples of the Indian subcontinent, two regions with Muslim majorities--a large one in the northwest (West Pakistan) and a smaller one in the northeast (East Pakistan)--were partitioned from the predominantly Hindu areas and became the separate nation of Pakistan.

A Map of India East Pakistan broke away from Pakistan in 1971 to form the independent nation of Bangladesh. Also bordering India on its long northern frontier are the People's Republic of China and the relatively small kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan. The island republic of Sri Lanka lies just off India's southern tip.

History and Geography Nearly one sixth of all the human beings on Earth live in India, the world's largest democracy. Officially titled the Republic of India, it's 1,269,413 sq. mi. lie in South Asia, occupying most of the Indian subcontinent, bordered by Pakistan (W); China, Nepal, and Bhutan (N); and Myanmar (E) and Bangladesh forms an enclave in the NE. Its borders encompass a vast variety of peoples, practicing most of the world's major religions, speaking scores of different languages, divided into thousands of socially exclusive castes, and combining the physical traits of several major racial groups.

History and Geography An independent country For 200 years, India was controlled by the British. Since independence in 1947: • education, production and health care have improved. Indians now live longer. Twice as many people can now read and write. • industrial production has increased. It is now six times bigger than in 1947. India is now one of the world's largest industrial nations.

People and Language Hindi, English, and 14 other languages are the official languages. Only about 3% of the population speak English, but many people do not accept Hindi as an official language, so English is used a lot in government, education, science and business. It is also the language that many Indians use to speak to each other if they don't share the same first language.

Life in The Cities India is a country of many contrasts. There are many wealthy people but millions of people who own very little. In the cities, there are terrible slums and thousands of people live on the streets. The Indian government has done a lot to improve things but improvements in health care mean that the population is growing very fast.

Culture Food The main foods of India are rice, wheat and pulses. Most Hindus do not eat beef and many are completely vegetarian. Muslims do not eat pork. Indians eat many kinds of curries, with vegetables, seafood, meat or eggs in a 'hot' sauce.

Religion in India About 83% of Indians are Hindu, and about 11 % are Muslim. There are also large groups of Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains. Maytraya Jesus’s tomb

Religion in India Taj Mahal Muslims, who constitute 11 percent of the population, are the largest religious minority. Many of these followers of the monotheistic faith of Islam are descendants of invaders from the Middle East and Central Asia who began entering the subcontinent as early as the 8th century. Taj Mahal Most, however, are descendants of converts from Hinduism and other faiths. The majority belong to the Sunnah branch of Islam.

And More about Religion Though a number of religions flourish in India's tolerant social climate, four fifths of the people are Hindus. Hinduism evolved from Vedism, the religion of the early Aryan invaders. While it recognizes innumerable gods, they are widely regarded as diverse manifestations of one great universal spirit. Hinduism has no standard orthodox form. It is, in effect, what people who call themselves Hindus do in carrying out their dharma, or religious obligations. This varies considerably from one region and social group to another. Lakhshmi Temple

Climate Strong, humid winds from the southwest and south usually lasts from early March to mid-June, very high temperatures are accompanied by winds and occasional dust storms. In general, India's climate is governed by the monsoon, or seasonal, rain-bearing wind. Most of the country has three seasons: hot, wet, and cool. During the hot season, which usually lasts from early March to mid-June, very high temperatures are accompanied by intermittent winds and occasional dust storms.

Investigate India Fact box: Population: 1 billion. By 2050, it will have grown to 1.6 billion. Capital: New Delhi. Largest city: Bombay (12.5 million). Size: 3,287,590 sq. km. 3000 km wide, with a coastline of 7000 km. Climate: Most of India has a monsoon climate, with winds that reverse in the summer and winter. The summer is very hot (50°C in some places) and very wet.

Questions about India What questions do you have about India now? What does Indian music sound like? What do they eat? What do they wear? Why is English used a lot in India? Why do you think India has developed so much since independence? Why do you think there is so much poverty? Your question:….?
