Presentation transcript:

A review is a short description or summary of a book, movie, play, article, etc. Most academic reviews should be written in formal style.

PARTS OF A REVIEW a ) An introduction. This is where you introduce the story which you are planning to review and specify some background information about the article, movie, play or book where the story is presented. Such information normally includes the year of publication or the day of the premiere, as well as the author or director of the piece. Here you can also mention the general setting and name of the main characters of the story, but there is no need to go into various details at this point.

b) The main body. This part normally consists of two or three paragraphs. Here you can list and discuss all the main characteristics of the movie, article, play or book you are reviewing. Be sure to make specific comments on the style of writing or acting, the plot in general, character development, directing, etc.

c) A conclusion. It is crucial to give your personal feedback and either recommend or not recommend this piece to the audience. Here, make sure to give specific reasons for your opinion.

Consider these points… - Support your words with quotes ”….” - Be specific. - Do not attempt to be neutral. A review is supposed to be subjective, so your critical opinion is the key to a good review. Any attempt to cheat, copy and paste from internet will be evaluated with 1.5, if you need to use something from the internet, or books, magazines, etc. you should mention it in a note at the bottom of the page (taken from New York Time) It mustn’t be more than 3 to 5 lines.

- Use adjectives and adverbs to enrich your writing. They are your main tools when expressing your thoughts and attitude towards the movie, play, book or article you are critiquing. - Make sure that you give specific recommendations at the end of your review. - Check spelling and grammar

And last…but not least…. DON’T SPOIL THE END!!!

“ The Freedom Writers” Review The movie of “The Freedom Writers” is a recreation of the book “The Freedom Writers Diary” from the teacher Erin Gruwell, based in true events, the ones were written by her students telling their stories. This book was published on Spain with the name “Diarios de la Calle” on year The movie was directed by Richard LaGravenese, based on Institute Wilson Classical in Long Beach, on the ´90. The movie is about a teacher that arrives to Long Beach, California, and starts working on a public school, where the students lived in constant racial conflicts, making part of really dangerous gangs (street groups), where they even killed each other. This teacher decides to help their students by changing their life styles to help them go to university and respect each other. She starts by giving a diary to each other where they should write every day things that happened to them or just something they wanted to write about, and she tells them that if they want they can leave their diaries in a shelf for her to read them, just if they wanted to. This teacher at the end puts all the diaries together and this is how the book was written, and afterwards the movie. When we saw “The Freedom Writers” the first thing that called our attention was what the movie was about and the life that this kids had. They were younger than us and have had a terrible life. This movie made us think about the discrimination that poor people suffer, for example, in the movie they were not given materials to study because they could destroy these materials, but their school didn’t even teach them how to take care of the materials. We realize that it is more important to coexist with our classmates or people that are around us everyday than learning about a subject. With this, it is easier to study and learn. About the movie, the actors chosen for it, like Jason Finn, April Hernandez and Hilary Swank, we consider that they made a great job, making us being empathic about each character. It has very good scenes, for example, the scene were the teacher played a game where each student has to walk to a line drew on the floor when the answer to the question made by the teacher was positive. With this, students realized that they were not as different as they think they were. As a conclusion, we think that the job of the director was great, because achieves to show a tough reality in a funny way, there’s no moment were the movie is boring. We would recommend this movie because it’s about something that really happens in daily life, and it makes us appreciate our life and realize how lucky we are. It is a very interesting movie. For the ones who don’t appreciate their life this movie could be very useful for them.
