Motivations for the Age of Exploration The Three G’s G old G od G lory

Gold Europeans want spices and silk from Asia Italy controls all the trade with Asia during the Renaissance Explorers want to find a way to trade without going through Italy They are also searching for gold, silver, and gems.

God Reformation makes Europe focus on religion Catholics want to convert the people in areas that are being explored; Asia, Africa, Americas Jesuits help to do this.

Glory Europe goes nuts over the stories written by Marco Polo about the Far East His book tells about his visit to China Other explorers from Europe want to become famous and make discoveries just like Marco Polo

Which motive would encourage you to go exploring? Why? Which motive seems to be the best reason? Why?

Technological Advances Think ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) because Columbus sailed the Atlantic. Astrolabe Compass Caravel

Astrolabe It is developed in the Middle East Europe gets it through trade It uses the position of the sun and stars to allow explorers to calculate their latitude

Compass Developed in China The needle points north/south Used with the astrolabe to allow ships to travel in a straight east/west line without having to see land.

Caravel Before the caravel, Europeans will use shallow galleys to move goods through water. The caravel sits deeper in the water, and is more stable in rough seas. It will also hold more cargo. The caravel could be equipped with cannons.
