Learning Platforms Past Present Future VLEs, MLEs, PLEs, CLEs… Do schools need a learning platform?

Past 2001 – Digitalbrain - a pan London VLE Too early Website vs VLE MLE functionality teaser Implementation issues

Implementation advice “For success, commit to the use of the new technologies (which may include investment in school networks), re-engineer the processes inside the school to enable collaboration and sharing and gain experience in managing the change required before committing to a learning platform.”

LGfL Procurement Evaluation Who has interoperability? How much!? What more does it do? Does it really do it? Local or Central? Proprietary or Open standards? Cars

MLE VLE

FAQs on learning Platforms What’s the best learning platform? How much is it? How fast is it? Is it simple to use? Can the parents see the pupil’s information? How secure is it? Can it do all those wiki, bloggy things? Can you help? Can we convert our website to it?

Questions they should ask… Is it worth doing? What do I want to see as an end result? How does this tie in with the SRF and the SDP? What is my LA doing? What is my RBC doing? Who is going to maintain it? What other roles and responsibilities are involved? How do I get my staff on board? Has the starting point of the process of change been identified? Will it talk to my other systems? What do I tell the parents about safety?

Future Multi-platform/MIS Interoperability between MIS Interoperability between platforms Shibboleth Big Boxes or Little Boxes? More centralised management CLEs Online operating systems
