2 JISC Collections JISC Collections for Schools – partnership between JISC Collections, the RBCs and Becta enabling schools to have access to high quality and curriculum relevant resources at the lowest ever price Choice of 11 online resources – from newspaper archives and image databanks to invaluable resources covering history, science, art and music, modern languages Discounts of up to 75% – plus generous licensing terms – have been negotiated with publishers for UK schools Pricing is calculated on overall number of learners at a school, or schools within a region

3 Software Licensing Framework Office productivity software Previous framework 2005 - 2008 – £49.5 million through the framework in 3.5 years – Savings of £26 million 2008: replacement framework - collaboration with OGCbuying.solutions 12 framework agreements awarded September 2008 Live on 9 October 2008 – 1 ‘pure’ open source provider – Sirius Corporation – 2 other ‘new’ companies – Academia & SCC – 9 companies on previous/current Becta frameworks – £100k LA requirement already identified Aggregating requirements?

4 Learning Platform Services Framework Becta Framework monitoring evidence: 84 LAs have used the Becta Framework to achieve the 2008 target – And of the potential 8,000 schools in these authorities, 7815 (98%) have committed to spend their money with the LA selected provider – This represents just over 3 million learners “The Becta framework has given us a simple but robust path to procure a county-wide learning platform on behalf of Oxfordshire schools. Support provided by the Becta staff and website guidance has been tremendously helpful in the procurement process and to make sure the mini-competition runs smoothly.” ( Graham Shaw Deputy Head - ICT Services, Oxfordshire County Council)

5 Schools Open Source Project Contract awarded to Alpha Plus June 2008 Promotion of awareness of the wide variety of open source software in the marketplace 2 year project funded by Becta Awareness and promoting choice, not encouragement or advocacy Creation of a community to support schools Focus on the educational context, not the technical aspects Website now in place (http://opensourceschools.org.uk/)(http://opensourceschools.org.uk/) First community workshop held 21 October

6 Microsoft Update Recent Becta Press Announcement on progress with Microsoft (http://news.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=37559&page=1661)http://news.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=37559&page=1661 New pilot subscription licensing arrangements to be launched by mid 2009 enabling schools a choice on how many devices to license and an alternative to license by user Announcement by Microsoft to introduce built in ODF interoperability to MS Office 2007 by mid 2009 via SP2 upgrade (Becta shortly evaluating beta version) Individual letters sent to brief all LAs - have these filtered through and are there any questions? MoU has been extended for a further 3 years until December 2010 providing discounted educational discount arrangements for schools

7 Consultancy Services Framework Currently evaluating PQQs and short listing suppliers Soon approaching the ITT stage Framework awards in June ’09 Existing framework being extended to provide continuity Broadened scope to cater for diverse range of needs (incl. FE & Skills sector) Key support for Capital Build and BSF/PCP programmes

8 Managed Services Report available on Becta website on the benefits of a managed service including 13 x case studies (http://partners.becta.org.uk/index.php?section=rh&catcode=_re_rp_02&rid=14547) Features a range of LAs, schools and colleges who have derived benefits from a managed services approach Common theme has been how it has enabled schools to fully concentrate resources on core business (teaching and learning) rather than ICT provision and support Major CSF for schools to be able to accurately specify their ICT requirements in functional terms and to determine relevant & affordable service levels

9 Adoption & Feedback Encouragement and support for the effective use of Becta’s procurement arrangements Aggregating procurement on behalf of LAs and schools to drive value for money Identifying opportunities to manage and/or support mini competitions on behalf of LAs Need more feedback on the effectiveness and ease of use of Becta Frameworks (in terms of what works well and any areas for improvement) Need more feedback from users about framework supplier performance levels for input to Becta’s contract management processes Seeking LA support in identifying use of best value procurement arrangements and any associated savings being made
