Agenda for the Day 1. Discussion of setting. Where does the novel take place? 2. Friendship….What does it mean? 3. Point of View 4. Venn Diagram….Details 5. Recall and Interpret 6. Vocabulary 7. Chapter 1-3 and Author Quiz. Any general questions before we begin?

Setting Where and When The story takes place in Staten Island, New York, in the late 1960’s During this period, public protests against racial discrimination and the war in Vietnam helped create a climate of rebelliousness against authority. Increase in teenage smoking, drinking and using profanity. There was a definite struggle to gain greater political power. In school, at home and in the community.

Friendship Discussion Friendship Who is your best friend? Why is this person important to you? Why do you value their friendship?

Point of View The Pigman has two first-person narrators, John and Lorraine. They are the main characters in the novel as well as the “voices” that tell the story. John and Lorraine take turns explaining what happened, so that readers see events from John’s and Lorraine’s point of view as the chapters progress. Pay special attention to the comments that John and Lorraine make about each other. Like real best friends, they often have insight into each other’s personality.
