What is Remembrance Day? Remembrance Day is a memorial day for all the soldiers that died fighting the wars. This does not only included World War 1, but Remembrance Day is held on the day World War 1 ended. Remembrance Day can also be called as Armistice Day in some countries and are celebrated in many different ways, all around the world.

The Great War World War 1 started when the archduke of Austria-Hungary was assassinated while he was in Serbia. This started a war, since there were many alliances with the countries around them. There were many types of warfare such as trench, and tank warfare. At the end of the war, the axis surrendered and Germany was claimed to be in-charge of all casualties during the war. The war ended at 11AM on November 11th, A treaty was signed by the Central Powers and the Allies, which ended the war.

Times to Remember Canada joined World War 1 after Britain declared war on Germany. On World War 2, Canada joined the war by its own command, as that time Canada was allowed by itself to go to war or not. After World War 2 ended in 1945, 5 years later the Korean War started. All Canadians fought in these wars, and Remembrance Day in Canada was used to remember the soldiers in all these three wars. Now, Remembrance Day is not only for remembering the soldiers who fought in World War 1, but to remember the wars that Canada fought in.

Remembrance Day in Canada In Canada, we celebrate Remembrance Day by allowing some people to have days off. Furthermore, we have a “Two Minute Silence”, where we stop doing things and remember what the soldier did that fought for our freedom.

Two Minutes of Silence On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month there is 2 minutes of silence. People in schools, offices, and businesses stop what they are doing and remember During these two minutes, people think about the people who have served during times of war, conflict, and peace.

Why Remember? People remember these men and women because they were trying to preserve peace and freedom in their countries. Their actions made a difference in their countries future. It is important to remember the hardships that the soldiers endured during the fighting.

Poppies A poppy symbolizes the life, death, and the remembrance of what happened during the war. The poppies were a huge thing during the war, since the poppies actually grew on the battlefield. They grew because of all the bombs that hit the ground. The chemicals of the bombs allowed the poppies to mass produce. We wear poppies on Remembrance Day, so we remember what it was like for the soldier at war.

National War Memorial/ Tomb of the Unknown Soldier On Remembrance Day some people visit the National War Memorial in Confederation Square in Ottawa. The National War Memorial, unveiled in 1939, is a tall, granite, memorial arch with bronze sculptures. The bronze figures, each figure measuring over 2.2 meters high, on top of the memorial represent peace and freedom. Each year, Remembrance Day ceremonies are held at the National War Memorial

Remembrance Day Wreaths Poppy wreaths are often laid at war memorials on Remembrance Day. Wreaths were typically made out of Laurel leaves. The foliage of bay laurel trees has been a symbol of both victory and death. This is why wreaths are laid on Remembrance Day. Wreaths can be seen on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
