1 Remembrance Day Assembly
2018

2 Who are we remembering on Remembrance Day?
The fallen of the two World Wars World War 1: 1914 – 1918 World War 2: 1939 – 1945 Those who have died or been injured in all the conflicts since 1945

3 Why do we wear poppies? The Royal British Legion organises sales of the poppies every year; the money goes to help ex-servicemen and women and their families. This is to help us remember the men and women who have given their lives so that we might be free. We sell poppies every year at school.

4 But why poppies? World War 1 was fought mainly in France and Holland.
The men fought in trenches that were like long lines dug out in the mud.

5 When the war ended the fields that had been all muddy and horrid during the war became covered in bright red poppies. Soldiers returned to see the trenches covered in these flowers.

6 Wilfred Owen Owen died aged 25 on 4 November 1918,
one week before Armistice Day.
