2 nd Grade News January2012 Classroom Highlights: December Recap Happy New Year! The children returned to school after our Winter Break rested and ready to learn! I hope that you were able to find time to relax and spend time with family and friends over the holidays. I anticipate wonderful things for 2012 and am eager to see your child continue to make great academic progress! Looking Ahead to January’s Learning Objectives MATH Students will identify, describe, compare and contrast plane and geometric figures (circle/sphere, square/cube, and rectangle/rectangular prism). SOL Students will draw a line of symmetry in a figure and identify and create figures with at least one line of symmetry. SOL SCIENCE Students will investigate and understand basic types, changes, and patterns of weather. SOL 2.6. SOCIAL STUDIES The student will identify Martin Luther King Jr. as an American whose contributions improved the lives of other Americans SOL WRITING Write stories, letters and simple explanations SOL LANGUAGE ARTS Use language structure to expand their vocabulary, with a focus on basic grammar rules SOL 2.6. Read with fluency and expression, reread and self-correct when necessary SOL 2.7. Identify the problem, solution and main idea. Describe characters, setting, and important events in fiction and poetry SOL 2.8. Important Upcoming Dates January 3 rd – School Resumes January 16 th – Martin Luther King Jr. Day – No School January 20 th - End of 2 nd Grading Period January 23 th – Student Holiday February 3 rd - Cultural Fair Important News! If you receive the Tolbert Newsletter online you will no longer receive paper lunch menus. Please go onto the school website to access the school menu. Weather Please be sure to watch the temperature and send your child to school with appropriate outerwear for the winter months (warm jacket, hat, mittens, etc.). All students will go outside for recess, weather permitting. If your child does not wear an appropriate jacket they will not be able to go outside with the rest of the class.

Tolbert RESPECT! This month and for the start of the 3 rd grading period we will revisit our school and classroom rules for respecting SELF, OTHERS and PROPERTY. Below are our classroom rules. Your reinforcement of these rules and examples is greatly appreciated! SELF: Follow direction quickly Make smart choices OTHERS: Raise your hand and follow the code Use kind words PROPERTY: Keep our classroom neat Ask to use supplies We also recently read a selection of favorite children books to help us add “ingredients” for a Try-outs for the second grade musical are going on right now! The students will be performing “I’m Gonna Let It Shine” on Thursday, February 23 at 1:30 pm and 7:00 pm. Our music teachers, Mrs. Bonieski and Ms. Wallace are organizing this production so any questions should be directed to them. Teacher’s Corner Thank you for all of the sweet holiday cards and gifts! You all really know how to make a teacher feel special!
