Communism Discuss  Why would Communism catch on?

Communism  Revolution from the lower classes  Greater amounts of people  Searching for equality

20 th Century Communism  During Late 1900’s Communist Russia- U.S.S.R. becomes involved in post WWII battle against the United States on how to rule former imperial and colonial ruled countries.  U.S. wants to these colonies to be democratic  U.S.S.R wants these countries to be communist  Both were competitive with each other in making sure their agendas are pushed

20 th Century Communism  Countries of key importance were Cuba, Peru, Nicaragua  Cuba Revolution Established a Socialist state and Communist government led by Fidel Castro  The result is the U.S. puts trade embargo on Cuba  Cuba received $ from U.S.S.R.  Other neighboring countries that would follow would also receive $

Why so important?  What is the key difference with South and Latin America countries from Africa? Location to U.S.

Importance  During the 1960’s a nuclear arms race develops between U.S. and U.S.S.R. that places nuclear weapons in Cuba.  Everyone begins to worry whether weapons because if having nuclear weapons in Cuba could reach most of the United States and its major cities.  Ultimately an agreement is reached and both back down from warfare but both were always afraid of each other for decades.

Big Idea  Superpower countries used smaller countries as I way to fight but in other countries  Using them as pawns to chess game  Peer pressure from other countries because of $ and promises
