The World Since WWII Big things in the world since since 1945: – The Cold War – conflict between democratic/capitalist and communist countries Democratic/capitalist countries won – End of European colonialism and creation of new nations Most colonies gained independence by 1965 – New freedoms and rights International insistence on human rights Social movements gaining rights for women, ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, other oppressed groups – Globalization and economic development Rapid advances in communication technology Increased international migration Economic growth and interdependence Population boom and urbanization, especially in the developing world Environmental challenges, most significantly climate change
