Positives:
Began a growth in the Middle Class.
Quicker production of goods and made them much cheaper
Negatives:
Bad working conditions
Workers poorly paid and no labor laws
Led to rivalries between nations in the race to gain colonies

5. French Revolution Late 1600s – French king held absolute power
The French Revolution began in 1789 when the people began a rebellion against the king
They overthrew the king and formed a republic
Established the ideas of modern day government, politics, and individual rights.

6. Age of Imperialism
Late 1700s - developed nations started taking over less developed areas, colonizing them, or influencing them in order to expand their own power.
Imperialism:  a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means
Examples:
Great Britain – India, Australia, US & Canada
Scramble for Africa
Spain – the colonies of Latin America
US – Philippines, Hawaii

The rivalries between nations and competition for colonies among European nations helped cause WWI.
The allied powers (France, GB, Russia… later US) won and imposed harsh terms on Germany.

9. World War II
German’s resentment with the terms helped cause World War II.
Led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis
Holocaust –execution of nearly 6 million Jews
The U.S. joined WWII in 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.

Two atomic bombs were dropped by the U.S on Japan to end WWII
Hiroshima and Nagasaki

11. Germany Post-WWII After the war, Germany splits into 2 nations
West Germany – allied with non-Communist Europe and the U.S.
East Germany – allied with the Communist Soviet Union
The capital, Berlin, was also split in two by the Berlin Wall
1990 – the two Germanys reunited under a democratic government

Period of conflict between the world’s superpowers
A race to build nuclear bombs, better weapons and the space race.
