Year 9 Art Textiles -Unit 1 This unit is designed to support you in becoming a successful Textile artist & designer. You will develop a range of researching, creative and practical skills. You will work with a range of materials and learn how to create innovative and original designs through the use of systematic design process.

What is Art Textiles?

Art Textiles will give you the opportunity to: Explore are wide range of textile materials Experiment with formal elements Create innovative designs Construct practical work Develop 2D and 3D designs

Think, Pair, Share 1) Think individually about the question 2) Pair with a partner and discuss the question 3)Share ideas with the rest of the class.

What do you think inspired the creating of this design? William Morris

Pattern in Nature

1 Pattern Visual Research Think carefully about your class work exploring pattern and nature. Research on the internet, in magazines and books to find pictures of pattern in nature, using your mind map to help you. Present on a double page in your sketch book. You should have at least 10 good quality images of different patterns, sized at 4 to a page. These should be close up images featuring patterns that you think are interesting. The internet, magazines, newspapers and books. Ext: Digital camera and printer Take your own primary photographs of naturally occurring patterns. TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

Today you are going to complete a series of observational Line Drawings, exploring the visual research you gathered for your homework. A line drawing is a drawing using only line, no tone. We are using line drawings as the are good for exploring shape, texture, pattern by picking out fine details of an object.

Draw 4 equally sized boxes on a page in your in your book (or on a separate page of A4 paper if you cannot see you images while you draw the boxes ) 1)Start by planning out your drawing. Press really lightly with your pencil at this point. Plan out the position, size and basic shape first. 2)When you are happy with the position, size and basic shape you can start adding details. 3)Only press harder when you are happy with the accuracy of your lines.

Today we are going to look at the work of 6 contemporary designers who use nature as inspiration for their work. You will need to choose one of these to study

Analysing art work To do this task successfully you need to really look at the piece of design work you have chosen to study. Make sure you have a colour copy in front of you! I have chosen to study the work of: Initial Response: I have chosen to look at this design because: This design reminds me of: I find this design interesting because: , Subject Matter: This is a design of: How are the objects in the design arranged? How are the background and foreground arranged? Are they important to the design? , Colour: The colours in the design are: Does the artist use harmonious or complementary colours? How does colour very between the foreground and the background? , Now you are going to look at the Formal Elements of the design. You need to look very carefully at the way the artist has used these within the work. Remember they have chosen to create the design for a reason! Pattern: Are any shapes or objects repeated in the design? , Do the components of the design interlink/ overlap or stand independent of each other ? , Concluding Response: As I have studied the design I have been particularly impressed by I could use my understanding of this design to help me develop my work by: ,

2 Designer Visual Study Use a computer to find an example of pattern inspired by nature by your chosen artist (the one you studied in class). Print the image and present it in your sketchbook. Complete a visual study of a section of the pattern. The internet, printer, pencil Complete your study in full colour. TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

Think, Pair, Share 1) Think individually about the question 2) Pair with a partner and discuss the question 3)Share ideas with the rest of the class.

What makes for a successful pattern design? What would you expect to see?

Today we are going to begin designing a pattern of our own. To do this successfully you need to carefully follow a series of steps.

1)Select the most successful drawing from your previous lesson. 2)Use the tile on your desk to draw a rectangle in the centre of your piece of paper. 3)Draw your chosen line drawing in the centre of your rectangle. 4)Think about how you could begin to turn this drawing into a pattern design, using your designer to help you. Consider varying the following things Line Simplification Positioning of objects Repetition Detail

Creating Repeating Patterns 1)Cut your image in half down the middle 2)Stick your picture back together by attaching the opposite ends. It may help you to label the different ends of your paper. 3)Develop detail and pattern across the join that you have just stuck together. 4)By the time you have finished it should look like a seamless join between A and D. 3)Complete this process in the opposite direction. Cut down this line A B C DB A D C Stick A and D together

3 Material Resourcing Carefully consider how you can use background colour and texture to inform your print. Resource materials to use to print your design onto, which you feel will enhance your work, and build connections between your work and that of your designer. Bring these materials to your next lesson. Various Find additional materials which you can add to your print AFTER you have printed it (contrasting fabrics, beads, sequins, etc) TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension

To transfer your pattern successfully you need to follow these steps very carefully: 1)Trace off your pattern onto the tracing paper provided 2) Transfer the tracing to your press print tile 3) Go back over your line. Consider using different tools to achieve different widths of line.

Printing your tiles. Think very carefully about the colour of printing ink you are using and what colour paper/ material you are working on. Your prints will be more successful if you really consider your use of colour, so make sure you think about: Contrast Complimentary colour Harmonious colour

To complete your final piece successfully, what do you need to do?

AO1: Explore and create  Collect visual research  Explore and experiment with ideas  Explore and experiment with materials and processes  Develop practical skills Visual research collected. Ideas explored. Different materials used. Variety of different ideas. Materials/techniqu es compared. Skills improved due to experiments. Purpose of work carefully considered. Creative risks taken when experimenting. This has helped work develop. Clear understanding that materials work differently. Skills developed as a result. A lot of creative risk taking. Initiative and independence shown when experimenting. Effective use of composition/colour/ tone. Technical knowledge of different materials/processes improved, skills developed. Skills are good Taking creative risks has helped technical skills, skills very good as a result. Work creative, imaginative and original. A range of materials/processes used confidently and skilfully. Consideration given to how composition/ materials/processes/ton e/colour work together. Work highly creative Experiments show imagination and originality Different materials explored in detail. Careful consideration given to what is trying to be achieved/ communicated. AO2: Understand and evaluate  Analyse the work of artists  Analyse the ideas, methods and approaches different artists use  Understand the ideas and intentions behind artists’ work  Evaluate, adapt and refine my own work Similarities and difference between own work and the work of artist(s) identified. Own work adapted, areas improved. Clear understanding that artist have different ideas/methods and approaches. Artist’s ideas and intentions understood. Own work influenced by what has been learnt about artist. Own use of materials/colour/to ne evaluated and adapted. Artist’s ideas and intentions considered and discussed. Clear understanding of how artist’s background and/or ideas/intentions affect his/her work. Clear understanding of what is trying to be achieved/communi cated in own work. Work modified and adapted as a result. Understanding of how artists communicate his/her ideas and intentions. Clear understand of artist’s history/society/culture and how this affected his/her work. All of this knowledge used to help student develop own work. Own ideas and views of artist and artwork developed. Understanding shown of how artist relates/connects to other artists in terms ideas/style. Artist’s work and own work analysed in depth. Artist’s work clearly affects own work and has helped student modify and adapt own work. Analysis of artists is highly personal and thoughtful. Thoughts and opinions about the work of others confidently expressed. Opinions backed with reasoned judgments. Own work deeply inspired by the work of artist(s). Own work critically analysed, modified and adapted throughout project.

4 Catch up and Complete Ensure your print designs are fully resolved and presented for your next lesson. You should have added any embellishments you wish to use, and may wish to cut down your final design and present them on card or paper to best show off your work. Various Complete an additional print sample for your deadline. TASK INSTRUCTIONS Materials Extension
