SSG MANUEL PUENTES MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY ORIENTATION Ms. Giorgi - Librarian Ms. Chavez- Library Aide

LIBRARY HOURS Monday – Friday 7:15 am - 4:00 pm* * hours may vary

GOOD HABITS Develop good habits by learning library rules. View this PowerPoint in full and it should answer your questions about using the library.

SAFETY FIRST! Lockdown – STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING, NO TALKING, PROCEED QUICKLY AND QUIETLY TO LIBRARY WORKROOM. TURN OFF LIGHTS, SHUT BLINDS, SIT ON FLOOR, NO TALKING. Fire Drill – STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING, NO TALKING, LINE UP AND PROCEED OUT OF THE LIBRARY SINGLE FILE. EXIT SCHOOL USING THE DOORS BY THE CAFETERIA. STAY SILENT IN A LINE OUTSIDE. LISTEN FOR INSTRUCTIONS. Your BEST behavior is always expected everywhere on campus. The library is a safe environment for learning, so bullying is never tolerated. Safety is no laughing matter. Always pay attention.

LIBRARY WEBPAGE Be sure to visit the library webpage. It’s easy to get to. Just go to our school homepage, look on the left-hand side under Quick Links, and Click your library! The webpage contains info on library policies, assignments you may be doing with a class, citing sources, and the online catalog.

CHECKING OUT BOOKS All students, grades 6-8 must keep library books in a gallon-size ZIP–LOC bag while it is in your backpack! Students may have one book checked out at any one time. We have books that may be “checked out” on the honor system.

THE BOOKS YOU CHECK OUT… To check out a book, go to the circulation desk. There you will be asked for your ID number. You may say your ID number, but check out is much faster and more accurate if you hand us your ID (with a barcode on it) OR your lunch card! Once this is scanned, your ACCOUNT appears on the screen. This has all of your information including books you have checked out and returned and also any notes such as fines you may owe. The book is scanned and then stamped with a date due that shows when your book has to be returned to the library.

RETURNING BOOKS Some students have a bad habit of not returning books on time…. Please return your books ON TIME! Books are checked out for 2 weeks at a time. When in doubt, check the date that was stamped on the DUE DATE slip. Keep in mind that you are responsible for returning your book ON TIME. A.05 fine is charged for every day books are overdue.

LIBRARY LUNCH PASS Teachers have been given several library lunch passes. Get a pass from your first period teacher or stop by the library in the morning and I will give you a pass. If you wish to come to the library after you have eaten lunch, be sure to have one of these passes. Leave it in the library and it will be returned to your teacher for the next day. Do not ask your teacher to write out a pass for you. If your teacher has a substitute that day, do not ask the sub to write out a pass for you.

COMPUTERS Library computers are used for school purposes only! Please, no games or just surfing the Internet. Always ask permission to use the computers. You will be assigned a computer to use. Be sure to shut down properly. Just shutting off the screen does not mean the computer is shut down correctly. You will be shown how to do this correctly. There is no printing in the library.

REMEMBER THE IMPORTANCE OF READING…

FINALLY… This includes gum and bottled drinks. If you have a bottled drink in your backpack, it should be sealed. Cell phones are turned OFF in the library!

QUESTIONS Any questions? Thank you for your attention.
