Rising Student Activism Political speeches were outlawed in a designated area at UCB CORE member arrested Thousands of students blocked the police car Later, leaders are disciplined and students participate in a sit-in Free Speech Movement spreads

Life in the Counterculture Youth left traditional life to find “carefree existence” Rejected materialism Some hippies formed communities in run-down urban areas: Haigh- Ashbury Others “dropped out” of society- joined rural communes to harmonize w/ nature

Hippie Culture Enlightenment through new religions (Buddhism) Searched for answers via astrology Experimented w/ illegal drugs Expressed sense of freedom w/ casual/colorful clothing Embracement of African American culture The Establishment perceived counterculture as threatening, uncivilized, unpatriotic

Decline of Counterculture Many became addicted to drugs or died from overdoses No way to support themselves financially

Legacy of Counterculture Attitudes Effected dress: casual is the norm People began to openly discuss taboo topics (i.e. sex & violence) Art & Film Pop art emerged - Andy Warhol Film censorship rules relaxed Music Rock n’ Roll: outlet for youth to express discontent w/ society & desire for change Woodstock Festival 1969 in NY
