A movement made up mostly of white, middle class college youths disillusioned by the Vietnam War. Idea of life based on peace and love Hippies part of New Left movement, opposed: Materialism Technology War

Even the CIA used LSD LSD would become illegal in California in 1966

4 Opposition to Hippies Signs saying “Make America Beautiful – give a hippie a haircut”

5 Height Ashbury Located in San Francisco, seen as the capital of hippies Turn away from traditional living arrangements Communes Live on streets

9 Decline of Movement New life style did not have enough structure such as who would cook and pay bills Peace and love but no money Many hippies ended up on welfare, dependent on the society that they had rejected

Conservative Response Late 1960s Nixon talked about the decline of American society J. Edgar Hoover head of FBI warned the counterculture that they would be seen as “revolutionary terrorist”
