UNIT 14 OBJECTIVES This unit can help you: –See the relationship among mind, body, soul, and personal wellness –Understand a holistic approach to wellness –Develop a personal plan for wellness –Learn the role you play in campus safety –Understand sexually transmitted diseases

HOLISTIC WELLNESS Three areas to be in balance: –Your body –Your mind –Your soul

Health Eating has become America’s favorite new hobby. Overeating is not healthy. Maintaining a healthy body, mind, and soul is one of the most exciting and challenging aspects of your college career. Approaching your health from a holistic standpoint means that you don’t ignore any aspect-neither your body, nor your mind, nor your soul. Health is a condition that is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.

PEOPLE WHO ARE MENTALLY HEALTHY Have a positive sense of self-worth Make an effort to be healthy Love and have meaningful relationships Understand reality and limitations Have compassion for others Know the world doesn’t revolve around them

COMBATTING THE BLUES Get physical exercise Share thoughts and feelings with a friend Do something special for yourself Nurture yourself Don’t be ashamed to seek professional assistance

EXPANDING YOUR SPIRITUAL NATURE Read books about different religions, spiritual journeys, and inspirational persons Join a group on campus or in the community that explores different spiritual themes Keep an open mind and listen to a variety of perspectives Join a meditation group Begin journaling about your feelings, desires, aspirations, and what contributions you want to make to the world

Depression and Anxiety Disorders Depression is a term used to describe feelings ranging from feelings blue to utter hopelessness. You should think about how you use the term “I’m depressed” in your everyday conversations.

WHEN DRINKING IN PUBLIC… Alcohol is a drug Don’t take drinks from someone you don’t know or trust Watch your drink being prepared or opened Accept only unopened drinks when possible Don’t leave your drink unattended Cover your drink with your hand in a crowd Socialize with people you trust
