Propaganda

What is Propaganda? Refers to any technique, whether in writing, speech, music, film or other means, that attempts to influence mass public opinion...“ All propaganda has a persuasive quality

Propaganda… Intends to make us accept something without examining the evidence Uses emotion to prevent critical thinking

Card Stacking Shows the product’s “best” features, telling half-truth, or lying about potential problems Can you say infomercials??

Bandwagon Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it.

Testimonial Using the words of a famous person to persuade. Think of the Proactive commercials Subway commercials (RGIII)

Plain Folks Using everyday “people” to sell a product or service. Think of presidential candidates kissing babies, mingling with the common folk.

Transfer Using the names or pictures of famous people but not using direct quotes. 8 Tiger Woods Serena Williams Michael Jordan LeBron James Peyton Manning Michael Phelps Derek Jeter David Beckham Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Repetition The product name or something related to it (symbol, etc) is repeated a number of times

Name Calling This techniques consists of attaching a negative label to a person or a thing. Rather than explain what they believe in, they prefer to try to tear their opponent down.

Emotional Words Words or images that will make you feel strongly about someone or something.

Infomercials Infomercials are program length (up to 30 minute) ads that try to persuade you to purchase their product by their propaganda technique alone.
