2 What do these images have in common? They are all examples of propaganda!

3 Propaganda WHAT? A message used to persuade you to believe something or do something WHO? Corporations Government Individuals HOW? There are 7 propaganda techniques we will discuss today but there are many more! WHERE? Commercials Packaging Speeches Billboards Internet Newspapers Stores WHY? To persuade you to buy something, think something, or do something.

4 There is often more than one propaganda technique used such as this ad that uses fear, emotional appeal, and loaded words

5 The 1 st type of Propaganda is… Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it. All the cool kids are doing it Everybody has one!

6 Bandwagon works because it makes you think “everyone is doing it” and you should too. Why is this sign considered BANDWAGON?

8 The 2 nd type of Propaganda is… Love Hate Using words that will make people feel strongly about someone or something.

9 Loaded words work because they make you feel a certain way. What words are used in these ads to make us feel a certain way?

11 The 3 rd type of Propaganda is… Using words and images of a famous person or an expert to persuade.

12 Testimonials work because you feel like you can trust the words of an expert or someone famous.

14 The 4th type of Propaganda is… Using images to bring up strong feelings or emotions in order to persuade.

15 Emotional Appeal Propaganda works because you transfer the happy or negative feelings you associate with a picture to the same feelings about a person or product. What emotion is being evoked by this ad?

17 The 5th type of Propaganda is… Using repeated messages or pictures to persuade. SUNDAY!

18 Repetition works because you remember things better when you’ve seen or heard it more than once. How is does this advertiser use repetition?

20 The 6th type of Propaganda is… Links a person, idea, or product to a negative symbol.

21 Name-calling works because if we believe the competition is bad, we can assume this product will be the best choice. Why do you think we see this technique used so often in politics?

23 The 7th type of Propaganda is… Plays on our deep- seated fears and warns the audience that disaster will strike if we do not follow the instructions.
