Strategic Awards Assessment Taskforce (SAATF) Recommendations – Phase II November 3, 2011

Why are AWARDS so important to SWE? RECOGNITION Externally – supporters of the mission Internally – acknowledge members’ contributions Increases Membership – Awards are a large reason why many people are in SWE and also why they remain active. SWE FY12 Goal Objective 2.4: Increase recognition of SWE members as influential and sought-after leaders as measured by the number of members participating in prestigious and influential positions, including committees and advisory boards inside and outside of SWE. FY12 Goal 2.2: Make recommendations to increase recognition of women engineers for prestigious SWE and external awards.

Taskforce Purpose – Phase II The Strategic Awards Task Force was chartered to provide the Board of Directors (BOD) with recommendations on future SWE awards to keep, revamp or sunset and revisions to the awards committee processes for the submission and evaluation (Phase I and some of Phase II). Implementation of the recommendations and revisions will be based on available budget.

Taskforce Scope – Phase II In Scope Phase II Both individual and section awards Recommend list of awards to keep, revamp, or sunset. Note: Implementation of the recommended process changes will be the responsibility of the BOD and Awards and Recognition Committee.

Phase I and Phase II Team Members Tricia Walker – Chair Jill Tietjen Elizabeth Bierman Stacey DelVecchio Wendy Landwehr Allison Lunde Susan Tarr Maggie Austin Amy Hammar Krystle Gard

Path Taken by SAATF – Phase II Review current award categories and awards Benchmark current SWE awards to NSBE, SHPE, SAE, Women in Cable Telecommunications, Women Transportation Seminar, American Association of Women Dentists, American Association of Women Radiologists, IEEE Brainstorm new awards needed Evaluate benchmark and potential new awards as a team Develop list of awards to keep, sunset, or revamp Compile recommendations Present to BOD

Outline of Recommendations Recommendations – Leave As Is Recommendations – Minor Recommendations – General Specific Recommendations by SAATF Communications Award Emerging Leader C2C New Award

Recommendations – Leave As Is - Phase II Individual Awards Upward Mobility Award Resnik Challenger Medal Distinguished Engineering Educator Award Fellow Grade Member Distinguished Service Award Section Awards Collegiate Member Awards Collegiate Transition Region Membership Award Motorola Foundation Multicultural Award Boeing Company Multicultural Award

Recommendations – Minor - Phase II Individual Awards Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award Award one individual contributor and one company contributor. Awards Committee will need to update packet. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1. Distinguished New Engineer Award Leave structure as is, but award 10 awards. Awards Committee will need to update packet. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1. Work Life Balance Award Leave structure as is, but change name to Work Life Integration Award. Awards Committee will need to update packet. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1.

Recommendations – Minor - Phase II – (Continued) Individual Awards (continued) Achievement Award Change name to Lifetime Achievement Award. Award states, “The ideal candidate will be a woman who has made outstanding contributions over a SIGNIFICANT period of time in a field of engineering.” Recommendation to quantify SIGNIFICANT. Awards Committee will need to clarify “significant” in packet. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1.

Recommendations – Minor - Phase II – (Continued) Section Awards (continued) Professional Development-Program, Event, and Media Recommend to sunset Media category (part of Communications Award) and combine Program and Event into One Professional Development Award. Implement FY12. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1. Membership Awards (Membership Retention and Recruitment) Better define the word “best” (program, event, etc.) in award descriptions. – What is the rubric to define “best”? Reword the Submission Format bullet points – Difficult to understand. Implement FY12. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1.

Recommendations – General - Phase II Outreach Event/Series, Program, Girl Scout, Corning, MOU, etc. Outreach Committee, along with the Awards Committee, to revamp this year. This activity is being led by the Outreach Committee. Outstanding SWE Counselor and Faculty Advisor Recommendation by SAATF to simplify and re-vamp award packet. Feedback, from students, is that it is a lot of work to submit for one of these awards. Recommending re-wording to take place for FY13. Entrepreneur Award Feedback is that this packet is vague and unclear. Recommendation to review and revamp award packet Recommending re-wording to take place for FY13. Implement scholarships and awards to Pre-SWE (Junior SWE or JSWE, possible suggested names) young women. This could be implemented once/if Pre-SWE clubs are kicked off in schools. Timing pending. Review how Awards are marketed. For example, some awards packets get zero applicants and others get numerous. Timing TBD.

Recommendations – Communications Award - Phase II Current 3 Awards Newsletter, Website, and Public Relations Recommendations Sunset categories. One Communication award. Professional Development Media Award is sunsetted and included in this Communications Award. Reasoning There are numerous varieties of media, more than just Newsletter, Website, etc., in today’s ever-expanding world. Next Steps Awards Committee will need to re-vamp packet. Implement FY12. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1.

Recommendations – Emerging Leader Award - Phase II Current Awards are awarded for the following areas: Academia, Manufacturing and Construction, Procurement/Logistics, Product Research, Design, and Engineering, Quality, Safety, Health and Environment, Sales and Marketing, and Systems Engineering. Recommendations 3 Options Leave categories as they are. Add other categories, so they are not so weighted (Product Research, Design & Engineering is always heavy in applicants). Sunset categories and award 10. Awards Packet would need to be adjusted since right now there are categories. Next Steps BOD and Awards Committee to decide which option is best. Awards Committee will need to re-vamp packet, if option 2 or 3 is chosen. Implement FY12. Recommendations to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1.

Recommendations – C2C Award - Phase II Criteria All Collegiate Sections Can Apply Large, Medium, Small Reasoning To encourage ongoing collegiate involvement in college and transition into professional status. Judging 50% C2C Program/Event, 50% C2C Score Similar to Collegiate Transition Award Formatting follows other awards in this packet Next Steps Call for motion and vote. Implement FY12. Award Packet to Awards Committee by Dec 1. Implemented by Awards Committee by Jan 1.

Recommendations – New Award - Phase II Recommendation SWE awards an Outstanding Woman in Technology award. Mimic after NSBE award. Based on a career of exceptional accomplishments in an engineering or other technical field and demonstrated leadership abilities. Beginning of Criteria Development: Must demonstrate exceptional leadership and a pioneering spirit in her technical field. Must demonstrate work that has increased the number of women in engineering and technology. Must demonstrate a high level of achievement in technology, years experience. Must demonstrate activities supporting SWE’s mission. Reasoning The SAATF, during the benchmarking and review process, noted that there is not a year award opportunity. Next steps Awards Committee develops sub-committee and awards packet. Recommending implementation FY13.
