2 Page 2 FY12 Strategic Goals & Objectives GOAL #1 – Growing the Profession – Outreach There is an increase in women choosing to enter the engineering and technology profession Objective 1.1: Increase the number of women feeding the engineering/technology schools by starting a community college program and middle / high school pilot program. GOAL #2 – Professional Excellence Women in engineering and technology excel professionally, and their achievements are showcased and valued Objective 2.4: Increase recognition of SWE members as influential and sought-after leaders as measured by the number of members participating in prestigious and influential positions, including committees and advisory boards inside and outside of SWE. GOAL #4 – Inclusive Global Community Women in Engineering and Technology and SWE stakeholders find value in SWE as a diverse, inclusive, global community Objective 4.3: Restructure volunteer opportunities that are adapted to the diverse lifestyles and priorities of our members as measured by increased volunteer participation GOAL #5 – Membership SWE is a first choice organization for supporting women in engineering and technology as seen by the retention and growth of its membership. Objective 5.2: Increase international membership to 1000

3 Page 3 Goal #2-Professional Excellence Actions Objective 2.4: Increase recognition of SWE members as influential and sought-after leaders as measured by the number of members participating in prestigious and influential positions, including committees and advisory boards inside and outside of SWE. FY12 Goal 2.2 Make recommendations to increase recognition of women engineers for prestigious SWE and external awards (Owner: Dir of Emer Initiatives) Related Committees/Taskforces Awards Committee (SWE individual and section awards) Strategic Awards Transition Taskforce (SWE individual awards and new SWE individual awards) Future possibility: CPC subgroup and/or a new SWE taskforce (focusing on recommending for external awards and external influential positions)

4 Page 4 Awards Committee Update Off to a bit of a rocky start with differences in procedures captured in the interfacing groups for notification of Individual Award Results. All results were communicated to nominators and recipients by July 27. Currently Individual Award Coordinators & Committee Chair are responding to 74 feedback requests (51 have been sent to date) out of 166 submissions Concurrently Section Award Coordinators are finishing up selection of Section Awards (will be submitted to SWE HQ ~ Aug 19/20) - 227 submissions for 24 different section/region awards to coordinate Chair was recently made aware of logistics for new Region Award (25th) to be added to Celebrate SWE Also in the process of revising procedures to incorporate suggestions from Awards Task Force and other recommendations made, talked with HQ to sync procedures and operating instructions, and using Bylaws Procedures & Conference Program Board as a benchmark. Next step editing and sending out to committee for feedback.

6 Page 6 Awards Processes and Issues (Individual Awards) Major Cycles Big operation (FY11: 176 submissions, 32 awards; 18% success rate) call for nominations (announcement of submission deadline and submission requirements) compliance check judging notification of all of the results feedback to nominators of the unsuccessful nominations Major Issues Compliance with the nomination requirements Confidentiality Conflict of interest Judging the submitted package based on the published award review criteria Objective, non inflammatory, non discriminatory feedback to nominator

7 Page 7 Strategic Awards Transition Taskforce (SATT) Phase 1: May 24, 2010 finding and suggestions SATT evaluated the awards processes and make suggestions Phase 2: Charter of Phase 2 (August 20, 2011) SATT will provide the Board of Directors (BOD) with recommendations on the appropriate structure for SWE awards. Such structure may include revamping, sunsetting, revising, or establishing individual awards. Out of scope: 1) Section awards (It be can another taskforce or Phase 3 of the taskforce 2) Implementation of process and infrastructure (Implementation of the recommended process changes will be the responsibility of Awards Committee.)
