RECONSTRUCTION Following the Civil War 1865 – YEARS

The Civil War and Reconstruction of the South

Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia John Brown, a white abolitionist, attempted to raid the U.S. Armory at Harper’s Ferry and steal guns. He hoped to arm slaves and start a slave rebellion. He was captured, tried, and hanged.

Abraham Lincoln, 16 th President of the U.S. A. Lincoln was considered the North’s biggest strength. He inspired Northerners to fight with his speeches and leadership.

The Anaconda Plan during the Civil War This drawing shows an anaconda strangling the South. The plan to blockade the Southern ports from shipping cotton and receiving necessary supplies from other countries worked.

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – January 1863 The Emancipation Proclamation was a document that granted freedom to the South’s slaves. The North, however, had to win the war in order for the slaves to be freed. This document gave Northerners a new reason to fight the war.

Andrew Johnson, 17 th President of the U.S. A. Andrew Johnson became President following Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865.

Southern men in government White Southern men controlled the government and passed laws that would help their plantations and businesses.

Carpetbaggers from the North. Many Southerners resented some Northerners who traveled to the South in order to make money during the Reconstruction (rebuilding) of the South. They were named “carpetbaggers” because their luggage was made from carpet scraps sewn together.

Ulysses S. Grant, 18 th President of the U.S.A. Grant was the North’s greatest general during the Civil War. Robert E. Lee surrendered to him at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, bringing the Civil War to an end.
