3 Study Abroad Office (SAO) Mission: Committed to enriching the academic experience at ASU by affording students the opportunity to develop the –intercultural competence; –transnational understanding; –leadership skills required to face global challenges. In cooperation with academic and service units, faculty, and staff, we provide comprehensive support services for the development, implementation, and coordination of academically sound, credit-bearing programs abroad that are accessible to ASU students across all disciplines.

8 Elements of a Strong Proposal: FD is familiar with program location. Considers geographic/academic overlap w/ other FD programs. Health and security concerns are addressed. Can program obtain target enrollment? Fiscally responsible and feasible for students. Academic integrity: –Are the content and delivery of the course enhanced by the international location? –Do proposed excursions have academic relevance? –Can students obtain credits that are relevant to their major, minor and/or degree program? –Required contact hours –Course selection

9 Budget Facts One program fee that includes ASU tuition and instructional costs. Fees are based on a blended tuition rate. Program fee based on single number of credits available.

10 New Programs: Role of the Faculty Director Program Proposal Process. Budget development (with SAO International Coordinator). Coordinates program logistics (housing, meals, transportation). Academics: syllabus, textbooks, international partners, guest lecturers, etc. Actively promotes program to obtain target enrollment. Reviews applications and selects participants. Pre-departure orientation. Mandatory pre-departure orientation for all faculty directors (5 hours) On-site orientation upon arrival in country. Responds to student misconduct, behavioral/personal problems. On-call 24/7 for emergency response procedure. Travel advance reconciliation.

11 New Programs: Role of Study Abroad Office, International Coordinators Work with FDs to create safe, geographically unique, academically sound and fiscally responsible programs. Aid with logistical arrangements. Manage program budget. Manage all liability documents. Reviews applications and selects participants (provides regular enrollment updates on program numbers). Oversee billing and financial transactions. Program promotion in coordination with FD. Student advising, pre-departure orientation. Emergency support. Post-program evaluation. Provide guidance regarding best practices in summer study abroad.

12 Promotion/Marketing Faculty Directors: Attend Study Abroad Fairs. Host informational sessions. Promote among current students, if relevant to academic discipline. Coordinate with academic advisors to promote via and during advising sessions if appropriate. Faculty directors learn of global events/opportunities on campus. Work with their college to share the summer FD opportunities during new student orientations. Study Abroad Office: Promotional flyers. Creates program website. Advertise information sessions on SAO events calendar. ICs attend info sessions to answer general study abroad questions. Campus-wide marketing. Study Abroad Fairs on the Tempe Campus. FDs are encouraged to attend and promote to over ASU students.

MAY-SEPTEMBER Work to complete the proposal process (pre-proposal approved by Dean, both narratives, additional approval). Meet with the SAO International Coordinator for your region to work on program details and budget discussion. FEBRUARY 10 FEBRUARY- AUGUST Work on and complete budget (and receive College and SAO approval). MAY-OCT/NOV Proposal process closes for Summer SEPTEMBER 25 Create all promotional materials. SEPT-NOV APPROVAL - MARCH 1: PROMOTE! Student application deadline for Summer MARCH 1
