Rise of Nationalism The growth of Nationalism, or (a deep devotion to ones nation), caused intense competition among European nations, with each seeking to overpower the other This increasing rivalry among European nations was created by territorial disputes, and competition for materials and new industrial markets.

Tension rises Tensions between Serbia and Austria steadily rose In 1908, when Austria imperialized two slave regions in the Balkans called Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Assassination at Sarajevo and the July Crisis Gavrilo Pricip Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Wife Sophie

On a cold June morning in 1914, on Serbian Independence Day, a group of 7 young Serbian Nationalist belonging to a terrorist group known as the “BLACK HAND” planned to kill the heir to the Austria-Hungry Thrown All but two of these men came to their senses and decided against trying to kill the Archduke. The 1st assassin, threw a grenade at the Archduke's open car. The grenade however slid off the rear of the car and exploded blowing the tire off the car behind the Archduke's. It wounded a few of the Archduke's aides, one soldier and several spectators.

The Archduke went back into his car and the motorcade decided to take a different route back to the military camp. As the first of the three remaining cars in the motorcade turned onto a bridge the motorcade stopped. The Archduke had failed to inform his drivers that a different route was chosen back to the military camp. As the first car backed up the Archduke's car was stopped for a second.

Using this opportunity, the second assassin Gavrilo Princip walked up to the car and stood on the running board, pulled out his revolver and fired several shots. The driver looked at the couple and, at first, thought that they were unhurt. In actuality, the Archduke had been hit in the neck and Sophie in the stomach. The Archduke opened his mouth and a stream of blood poured out. Sophie then lost consciousness. Franz Ferdinand turned to his wife with the words: "Sophie dear, Sophie dear, don't die. Stay alive for our children."

Meanwhile Princip had tried to kill himself after the attack first with his gun and then with cyanide. The gun was knocked from his hand, and the cyanide, as was the case with Cabrinovic, only made him retch. The authorities closed in on him and roughed him up. He was, astonishingly, taken into custody alive. The Street where Princip killed the Archduke has been renamed “Gavrilo Princip Way”, and his shoeprints were cast in the concrete where he stood when he pulled the trigger (Nationalism) He is seen as a National Hero to the Serbians

The Chain Reaction 1.Austria issues Serbia an ultimatum (do this or else), but decides to declare war even when Serbia accepts all the points but one; 2.Russia came to the Aid of its’ little Slavic Brother Serbia and declares war on Austria. 3.Germany declares war on Russia. 4.Germany simultaneously declares war on France as part of the Schlieffen Plan and marches through Belgium. 5.Britain declares war on Germany for violating Belgian neutrality. 6.Italy declares its’ neutrality. Drops out of Triple Alliance 7.What cause of WWI is this an example of ????? Triple Alliance VS. Triple Entente
