4 5 MAIN Causes of WWI. Nationalism, Militarism, Imperialism, and Alliances were all underlying causes. Assassination of the Archduke was an immediate cause.

5 Nationalism Pride in one’s own country or nationality.
In this region, there were many ethnic groups within existing countries that wanted to establish their own independence. Slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina desired to no longer be part of Austria-Hungary but instead be part of Serbia. Each country wanted to prove their dominance and expand their own influence on the world.

6 Imperialism When a country increases their power and wealth by bringing additional territories under their control. Britain was concerned with the growth of German colonies, also Britain and France teamed up to contain German territorial claims in Africa. The increasing competition and desire for greater empires led to an increase in confrontation that helped push the world into WWI.

7 Alliances Agreements between nations to help each other in the event of war. What happens if a country is in an alliance and it is attacked? Triple Entente was formed to create an alliance between Britain, France and Russia. Triple Alliance was formed by Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary.

8 Militarism The process by which a nation builds up its military for the purpose of intimidating and deterring other countries. This led to an arms race in which countries continually tried to out produce the other. Britain and Germany were spending insane amounts of cash on battleships and submarines.

9 Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. In June 1914 a Serbian-nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand sent groups to assassinate the Archduke. First attempted failed when a driver avoided a grenade thrown at the car. Later that day, Gavrilo Princip assassinated the archduke and his wife while they were in Sarajevo, Bosnia a part of Austria-Hungary. This led Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia.

10 Because of alliances the dominos started falling…
Russia mobilized troops to protect Serbia. Germany then declared war on Russia to protects its ally Austria- Hungary France then began to mobilize to help its ally Russia which resulted on Germany declaring war on France. Eventually the United States broke its status of neutrality and joined Britain, France and Russia.
